James Gunn has commented on the acrimony he's been receiving since taking over at DC Films. While he acknowledged that it causes him some pain, he also acknowledged that the hate he's received does not alter the plans for the DC Universe - and said that his job as an artist was more important than pleasing everyone.Gunn and Peter Safran are currently running the DC Films division, having taken over from previous CEO Walter Hamada. The DC Films division has not had the easiest time; there have been numerous scandals, creative difficulties, and other unforeseen circumstances that have plagued the company and kept it from rising to the level of success Marvel Studios has enjoyed these last 15 years.RELATED: James Gunn Reveals Booster Gold Is The Most Requested DC Character By FansIn a Twitter thread, Gunn stated that he and Safran were, of course, not happy with being called names and harassed, but also said that, "to be frank, we’ve been through significantly worse. Disrespectful outcry will never, ever affect our actions." He affirmed his and Safran's vision for the future of the DC Universe, saying that the harsh criticisms from some corners of the fandom means little to either Gunn and Safran. Their primary concern, according to Gunn, is curating a "wide & wonderful future for DC".

There have been several controversial moves that have attracted some ire towards Gunn. When it was announced that Henry Cavill would not be returning as Superman, and that Gunn was writing a new Superman film with a new actor, several fans were upset. Cavill had only just announced his return to the franchise, and many were hyped for the future possibilities of his portrayal.

There has also been a lot of speculation going around that Gunn will be rebooting the DCEU entirely. Several roles are reportedly being recast by Gunn, though as of right now, most are purely fan speculation and not confirmed. For many fans, this would represent a capitulation or claim that the DCEU was a failure - these fans view the optics of 'throwing away' the DCEU as conceding that some of their favorite properties weren't worthy of existing in a new DC Universe.

The fact that Wonder Woman 3 was cancelled also ignited some furious speculation. The film was considered one of the safer bets on DC's schedule, and its cancellation could signal that Gunn and Safran want to move away from the DCEU entirely. Additionally, some fans are concerned that bringing in new actors could complicate things further; any new Batman would be the fourth iteration of the character in 7 years. For now, though, fans can only wait and see what Gunn and Safran have up their sleeves.
