Sometimes it's easy to forget that celebrities can get just as starstruck as everybody else. Whether it comes from a famous musician going gaga about their favorite author or 2 movie stars mutually geeking out over each other on set, it's moments like that which help ground these larger-than-life figures and make them feel like the human beings some often forget they are. Well, it seems as though the weirder 2 people are, the more fun these stories tend to be. Case in point, consider the story of superstar Marvel and DC director James Gunn meeting his hero Bill Murray.
Gunn has been consistently making waves over the years with his own distinct filmmaking style, and apparently, that quirkiness resonated with fellow delightful oddball Murray. To celebrate Murray's 71st birthday, The Suicide Squad director posted the short tale of their encounter on Twitter, and it sounds perfectly in character for both of these legendary personalities.
According to the post, the two met by chance at a party Gunn was attending, and things immediately kicked off with the director positively freaking out about seeing one of his own personal idols just standing there in the same room. But as he attempted to keep himself from bouncing around in awe, he was shocked to see Murray actually take notice of him from across the room and make his way over. Naturally, being Gunn, his little story on Twitter is laced with plenty of coarse language.
Already surprised to see such a huge star specifically come his way, Gunn's dumbfounded glee was multiplied when Murray proceeded to kneel down next to his couch and wax poetic about how much he loved the director's work... in one of the Scooby-Doo movies. As many might react when speaking about the man behind DC's hugely successful The Suicide Squad and Marvel's now household name Guardians of the Galaxy series, Gunn assumed at first that Murray was joking. But after speaking with mutual friends, it turned out that the iconic actor just really loved that movie and often spoke about that adoration.
Murray, whose extensive film credits include Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Stripes, and nearly countless other memorable comedies, is well known for his rather eccentric behavior outside of his movies. From randomly stealing a french fry from a stranger's tray at Wendy's to crashing frat parties to offer everybody sage advice, the innumerable stories surrounding him are often likely exaggerated, but also endearing enough where people just hope they're all true.
So if nothing else, Gunn's little anecdote lends a little legitimacy to all the other barely believable urban legends out there about Murray. The two of them may not cross paths much on the professional level, but they may be more alike than either of them think.
The Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters.
