No matter which project he's working on, James Gunn always seems to have the uncanny ability to leave the audience wanting more. The success of The Suicide Squad inspired viewers to seek out the fantastic Peacemaker HBO Max series. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy is currently working towards its third film, with an actual holiday special on the way as well. With a Gunn production, nobody ever gets the full experience from just one installment.

Perhaps to commemorate April Fool's Day, or simply because Gunn is a virtuoso-level troll, the beloved director recently decided to (sort of) share a new behind-the-scenes shot on the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 featuring one particular highly-anticipated new character. Fans of either the comics or last year's surprisingly fantastic Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy video game are likely already excited about the presence of Adam Warlock in the next chapter of Gunn's popular film adaptation. But unfortunately for them, Gunn is apparently fully aware of that excitement.

On April 1st, the best day to announce a thing, Gunn took to Twitter with an exclusive first look at We're the Millers star Will Poulter in costume as Adam Warlock. But everyone pretty much has to take his word for it, because the actual image feels reminiscent of a family vacation where the 5-year-old middle child is in charge of the photography. So, curious fans were greeted with a nice gold blur in front of a blue screen with what appears to be Gunn's giant thumb covering half the lens. "I was taking a photo of me & Adam Warlock on the set of #GotGVol3 and somehow this is what I got," Gunn's caption said, adding an embarrassed emoji to further drive home the tongue-in-cheek nature of this blurry reveal.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Adam Warlock was created to be the perfect pinnacle of human evolution. Apparently, the perfect human is a big gold dude. But after breaking free from his creators, who sought to use him for nefarious purposes, he traveled through space seeking purpose. His godlike powers made him a formidable individual, but his lack of actual human experience often got him in trouble. Poulter has said that he's honored to be playing the role of Adam Warlock, and his background in both comedy and drama is sure to come in handy for such a role. It will also be interesting to see how he fits into the story, particularly whether his inclusion will be similar to how he was portrayed in the video game.

Naturally, one of the first replies to Gunn's tweet suggested that he just retake the picture, to which the director replied, "I did." One will be quick to note that he has not posted any more pictures. It's a simple bit of troll humor, but it's timeless. It feels reminiscent of the classic gag where someone asks "do you know the way to Main Street?" while the cheeky passerby answers "yep," and keeps walking. Hey, nothing wrong with taking a paragraph to appreciate some quality comedy.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 began filming late last year and is expected to finish later this month, so hopefully, things won't stay all hush-hush for too much longer. Gunn and his team are also filming the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney Plus simultaneously, which begs the question: is the Star Wars Holiday Special canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? When the film and the special are finally released, the answer to that question will finally not be addressed in the slightest.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to release on May 5th, 2023.
