The Super Mario Bros. Movie took over New York Comic Con, and Jack Black delighted the crowd by showing off his skill at voicing Bowser.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie revealed its first trailer at NYCC, showcasing the first look at several of the iconic video game characters. Audiences were delighted in particular by Black's rendition of Bowser, King of the Koopas, who had most of the trailer dedicated to his introduction. Fans also heard Chris Pratt's Mario voice for the first time, after it had been hyped up and held under wraps for months. Fans also got a glimpse at Keegan-Michael Key's Toad and Charlie Day's Luigi on the run from a horde of Dry Bones.
Black treated fans to an extended preview of his performance as Bowser while on stage at NYCC. As recorded by IGN, the crowd seems to be going wild for Black's performance, which is nigh-unrecognizable. The video reveals how much fans have already warmed up to Super Mario Bros. Movie and Black in particular. Since its Super Mario Bros. teaser poster was revealed a few days ago, fans have been excited to see the trailer. The film has a lot riding on it, as it's the first animated Super Mario Bros. film, and the previous film adaptation is well known as a film that's so bad it's good. Fans were particularly excited to see the voice acting in the trailer, especially since Pratt's casting was somewhat controversial, and the look of the film has been a point of curiosity for many months now.
Now that the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer has debuted, fans seem to have had many of their fears allayed. The appearance of the Mushroom Kingdom looks fantastic, the musical cues are reminiscent of the video games, and the vocal performances seem promising. There appear to be several Easter Eggs for fans of the video games, and it looks like the production crew is laboring on love and reverence for the source material, despite its lack of lore. Black also hinted on stage that Bowser has a taste for musicality, so he may bring some of his famed musical talents to the role.
Certain copyrights suggest that Nintendo is looking to produce more video game films, so the positive reception to The Super Mario Bros. Movie thus far is promising. If the film performs well, there could be more sequels and other Nintendo franchises on the horizon.
