The Isekai genre of anime has grown popular among fans over the years. Isekai storylines usually range from reincarnation into a game-oriented setting to starting a new life from birth in a totally different world. Among the latter, several anime feature stories involving the reincarnation of an overpowered demon lord or king, who still retains their previous strength and knowledge but have newfound goals.
One such example is the Misfit of the Demon King Academy, where the main character, Anos Voldigoad, the demon lord, is reborn and is trying to regain his lost authority. Another is How Not to Summon a Demon Lord, which has a comedic plot where the main character is summoned to another world and is trying to get a feel for his new, powerful abilities.
The Plot of The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn As A Typical Nobody

Presently, an anime underscoring a different narrative has been added to the Demon King fold. The -newly-released anime, “The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody,” features a lead character determined to forge deeper bonds with the people in his new life. In his previous life, Ard, the protagonist, was the highly revered Demon Lord Varvatos -- an apex authority and enigma within the continent he ruled. Varvatos was depicted to be a powerful character that had already subdued all the individuals that stood a chance at defeating him.
However, despite having great powers and fame, Varvatos lacked one crucial lifeline: a reliable friend. The show slightly revealed that Varvatos once had a friend who he betrayed; however, the specifics regarding the broken relationship weren't revealed. Probably, the anime would unravel the mystery behind the cause of Varvatos' betrayal. After being fed up with the monotonous life of politics and no person to interact with, since he was feared and heavily guarded, Varvatos then decided to reincarnate.
Successfully, he reincarnated as a baby born to a middle-class couple, who named him Ard. Content with his new life, Ard discovered that he still had a remarkable aptitude for magic. However, one pertinent issue still follows him to his new life; Ard still had no friends. After being a Demon Lord for a long time, he had subconsciously acquired a haughty attitude – a common attribute Nobles generally possess. However, this puts him at a disadvantage when he approaches other kids with the aim of befriending them. Viewing friendship as something akin to diplomacy, Ard failed miserably in making new friends.
Ard Finally Wins A Friend Over
After venting his frustration by inflicting damage on the surrounding forests, Ard meets the town Mayor and asks him the best method for making friends. The Mayor responded by telling Ard that through kindness and respect, one can make a lot of friends. Ard then awkwardly executes the Mayor's advice but still fails at befriending other kids. However, he refuses to give up, reflecting the unyielding will he possesses. Later, by coincidence, Ard spotted the Mayor’s daughter – a young, pretty girl venting out frustration on forest creatures. Due to their similarities, Ard approaches the girl, asking her to be his friend, but she rejects him outright. Refusing to give up, Ard devised strategies to win the young girl over, but she remained adamant.
Soon, Ard finally got the chance to prove his worth as a friend. The young girl, Ireena, was surrounded by goblins that she couldn't defeat; briefly, she succumbs to her inescapable fate, allowing the goblins to attack her. But right before the moment of contact, her desire to live resurfaced, and she screamed for help. At that moment, Ard cleared out the goblins saving Ireena. Once again, he proposed friendship to Ireena, and she revealed her reason for secluding herself from others. She had once faced and was adamant about not making new friends. Ard smiled at this revelation and promised never to betray Ireena as her friend. At this moment, they become friends, signaling the first desired achievement for Ard since his rebirth.
Episode 2 of The Greatest Demon Lord Is Reborn as a Typical Nobody focused more on the Ard's magical abilities. As expected of the Demon Lord, he displayed exceptional abilities as a mage, impressing his students and teacher, who began to suspect him for potent reasons. First, during his fight with a haughty noble child, Ard used the skill "multi-casting" to prevent the kid from getting harmed. To Ard, multi-casting was a regular skill; however, unknown to him, it had already become a lost skill that was hardly practiced by mages due to its complexity. So, his performance draws suspicion from his teacher, who happened to be his colleague when he was the demon lord.
Also, in this episode, Ard and Ireena befriended a new person, Ginny, who had self-confidence issues due to the traumas and abuse she had been through. In spite of this, Ard helped Ginny build her self-worth by teaching her a simple but advanced magical trick, depicting his proficiency at magic manipulation. Ard's new addition to the number of friends proved that his life is already changing compared to his previous one. Hopefully, this new Demon Lord anime offers more exciting scenarios and controversies, especially regarding why the practice of magic has degraded since Varvatos’ rebirth.
