UPDATE 1/30: Xbox Support has yet to send a message declaring the issues resolved at the time of this writing, but in our own testing and social media posts, it seems Xbox Live is back up. If players are still experiencing the black screen issue, they should try turning their console off and switching it back on. If that doesn't work, it is possible the outage is still impacting their area. Original story follows.

On January 30, 2019 around noon EST, Xbox Live went down for Xbox One users. The issue includes a "black screen of death" (as coined by some Xbox Live users on social media) that only displays a black screen after starting up the console. Additionally, Xbox users are reporting issues with signing in to their consoles, playing games, and using basically any other Xbox Live feature.

In a tweet from the Xbox Support team on Twitter, Xbox Live users are encouraged to visit the Service Status page to keep an eye on future developments. However, as acknowledged in a followup tweet, even the Xbox Service Status page is down.

At the time of this writing, it's unclear just how widespread this latest Xbox Live outage is or how long it will last. However, there is some hope that the issues will be resolved sooner rather than later. Xbox Support claims that the engineers at Xbox have identified the cause for Xbox Live's issues today, and are currently addressing the problems. In our own testing, we are still unable to get past the "black screen of death," but we'll update this article once access to Xbox Live has been completely restored.

This is the second major Xbox Live outage of 2019 so far, which certainly isn't a good look for the service. On January 12, there were issues with users being able to join parties with their friends or access various online content on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Those problems lasted for roughly three hours, but hopefully this latest outage doesn't last that long.

In the meantime, it will be interesting to see if Microsoft shares the cause for this latest Xbox Live issue. Xbox Live going down is a relatively rare occurrence, but when it's gone down in the past, it hasn't had this weird "black screen of death" issue. Hopefully this latest situation isn't due to a direct Lizard Squad-style attack on the service, and instead just some routine, easily fixed issue.
