As expected, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate used up a large portion of the time during Nintendo's special E3 direct event. After confirming the game's title and full roster list, Nintendo went into a deep dive of some of the many changes coming to the series with this installment.

The big question that has been on the minds of many fans since the game was teased still hasn't gone away: Is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate a port of the Wii U version? Nintendo didn't come out and use those words, but it definitely seems like we're looking at an enhanced and updated version of the game that was released on the Wii U a few years back. At this point, the answer is pretty unclear...

Multiple times during the conference the team referred to 'changes being made' and 'updates,' which make it sound like this is an update to the most recent version, rather than a brand new game. The gameplay footage looks great, but will certainly be familiar to Wii U era players.

Although the foundation of this game may be the same, the addition of every fighter in Super Smash Bros. history makes this title unlike anything that has come before it. Nintendo isn't using the words remaster, remake, or port; so we're not exactly sure how to refer to the title, but it seems like a safe bet to say this is a rerelease of the Wii U game with a ton of additional content.

At this point we don't know the exact answer to this question, but we'll report back when we figure it out.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is in development for Nintendo Switch.
