Steam users take to social media to note that the digital game distribution service is down, with the outage occurring shortly before the highly anticipated launch of Sons of the Forest. The outage began to occur around 12:00 CT, about an hour before Sons of the Forest's launch, and has been down for at least 45 minutes as of this writing.

It should be noted that, as with all cases like this, Steam is not likely down for everyone. However, there is a significant number of users being affected nonetheless.

According to Down Detector, there have been between 9,000 and 11,000 reports of Steam being down, which is likely only a drop in the bucket of the affected fan base. The cause has yet to be confirmed, but the most likely suspect is the forthcoming release of Sons of the Forest. While that may sound surprising to some, Sons of the Forest recently replaced Starfield as the most wishlisted game on Steam, and that seems to have manifested in a high number of users ready to play it at launch.

Regardless, hopefully, Steam will be back up soon and fans will be able to check out the survival horror game sequel.
