iPhone 5 Pre-Orders

As promised, Apple began taking pre-orders for the iPhone 5 at around 12:01 AM PDT this morning (September 14). For years, iPhone users have clamored for a device with a larger screen, and on that count, iPhone 5 delivers – it’ll be the first iPhone to ship with a 4-inch screen, which is taller than the display on previous models, but no wider.

Despite that welcome addition, reactions to the iPhone 5 have been distinctly mixed (read the full specs here), with technophiles claiming that the device is too similar to the iPhone 4S, and less impressive than competing handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S3. iPhone 5 pre-orders, however, defy that criticism.

Within an hour of going live, Apple had burned though its entire stock of pre-order inventory, and the wait for a new iPhone now stretches weeks past the device’s September 21 launch date. The Apple website currently shows that all iPhone 5 models will be available to ship in “2-3 weeks,” and all three US carriers – AT&T, Sprint and Verizon – show shipping delays of one to three weeks.

Needless to say, Apple executives could hardly be more pleased with the enthusiastic pre-orders. Speaking to AllThingsD, Apple spokesperson Nat Kerris got right to the point.

“Pre-orders for iPhone 5 have been incredible. We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response.”

Indeed, the iPhone 5 already looks like another massive success for Apple, which in August was named the most valuable company in history. As reported by Bloomberg, analysts believe that iPhone 5 could sell 10 million units by the end of September, and a total of 58 million units by the end of the year, which would result in sales of $36.2 billion. Carl Howe, analyst for Yankee Group, makes a bold prediction for iPhone 5 – but one that could very well come true.

“This is going to be the best-selling consumer electronics device of all time, bar none.”

What do you think, Ranters? Is Howe right? For that matter, did any of you manage to score a launch day pre-order? Anyone planning to camp out in front of an Apple Store the night of the 20th? Let us know in the comments below.
