Apple has officially unveiled its newest iteration of the iPhone, debuting the iPhone 12 during its live stream today, alongside several other new products. The smartphone features 5G capabilities as well as a refreshed design, though one that still echoes the company's design philosophy of the past few years – for better or for worse, judging by the initial reactions circulating online.

The iPhone 12 checks all the basic marks of an Apple device, though there's a smaller bezel around the screen and the edges are squared, which makes it resemble the iPad Pro to a degree. Starting at $799, the phone is available in black, white, blue, red, and green, similar to the iPhone 11 selection. However, Apple has opted to continue using the Lightning Cable as opposed to the increasingly universal USB-C cable, to the chagrin of many.

It's also worth noting that Apple won't be including the a charging brick or headphone in the box. According to the company, it's a move meant to reduce Apple's carbon footprint, which the company has made clear in the past. The phone will still include a Lighting Cable, though it uses a USB-C to plug into the charger, so some may need to purchase that separately. The move has been met with an outpouring of negative feedback online, with many accusing Apple of trying to increase its margins, rather than lower carbon emissions.

The iPhone 12 does feature 5G compatibility, which will make it capable of receiving blazing-fast data speeds through certain carriers, like Verizon. According to Apple, the iPhone 12 has been designed to take advantage of these speeds, and has run tests in numerous countries to ensure that there are no technical hiccups with the device.

Apple has been investing heavily in the iPhone's camera capabilities, and this year is no different. Like the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 opts for a dual-lens system instead of the three-lens system found on recent iPhone Pro models. However, it has a 12-megapixel f/1.6 camera, which should perform well in low-light situations.

For the most part, the iPhone 12 is what many enthusiasts were expecting to come out of the conference. It isn't a bold departure from previous models, though the design is more in line with what Apple has been doing in recent years. Forgoing the typical accessories may have negative ramifications for the company, though it remains to be seen whether or not that will have a tangible impact on sales of the device.

The iPhone 12 will go on sale on October 23.
