Apple announced that it will host its “Hi Speed” virtual media event on October 13, where the tech giant is expected to reveal the iPhone 12. The event takes place at 10 am PT and will be streamed directly from Apple Park.
This edition of Apple’s year-end event is somewhat different than usual. The tech giant usually reveals its new iPhone models in September, but this year the reveal was pushed back due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Apple still held an event in September, but its flagship iPhone product was absent. Instead, Apple used the September 15 event to promote its Apple Watch 6 and the Apple Watch SE, the iPad Air 4, the 8th generation of iPads, Apple Fitness+, and its Apple One service bundle.
Apple announced its October 13 event via an events page on the company’s website, but provided few details besides the date and time. The event’s “Hi Speed” moniker likely hints to the iPhone 12’s expected 5G connectivity and A14 processor. It is not known what else will be revealed at the event, but many have speculated that the company may also reveal a new pair of over-ear headphones, a less expensive HomePod, and a location tracking tag system that is rumored to be called AirTags. The event will be streamed across all Apple platforms, including the company’s website and its YouTube channel.
Apple is expected to unveil four iPhone 12 models at the event, including a 5.4-inch iPhone 12, a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max, a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max. The new models will be differentiated by their camera technology, according to several industry insiders. The 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max are expected to have the more basic camera package, with dual-lens setups on the back of the phone, while the more advanced Phone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are expected to feature triple-lens camera arrays with a new LiDAR Scanner.
The new iPhones are also expected to feature a new design with edges that are squared-off rather than rounded, which may give the phones an appearance that is similar to the iPad Pro. A few leaks have also suggested that the new iPhone 12 will feature high-refresh 120Hz displays, but Ming-Chi Kuo, a prominent industry analyst, said last month that this is not true.
Even though Apple will announce the next generation of iPhone at the event, early adopters will likely have to wait longer to get one of the new devices for themselves. It was previously reported that Apple might ship the iPhone 12 sooner than usual, but that has since changed because of the pandemic. Several insiders predicted that Apple will stagger the iPhone 12’s release schedule, with some models possibly not releasing until November.
