The Denmark-based development house, IO Interactive, is putting out a call for applications to work on an unannounced AAA title, but with the release of Hitman: Absolution coming next year, could it mean the development cycle for Kane & Lynch 3 has begun and IO is starting to recruit for it?
The dysfunctional criminal duo of Adam “Kane” Marcus and James Seth Lynch were thrown together in a moment of happenstance during a routine prisoner transport. They crossed the wrong people, and then ended up crossing the wrong people again in Shanghai only to narrowly escape, and now it sounds like they will be reunited. It would be a good guess that Kane & Lynch 3 would be the direct follow up to the ending up K&L2.
While our review of Kane & Lynch 2 painted the sequel to the original as an improvement, it was still lacking in some areas. The shaky-cam system of playing the game added a lot to the visceral and hectic nature of the game’s theme and was incredibly complimentary. However, the gameplay changes implemented were not quite there in effectiveness at times. Some of the positions IO is hiring for, a senior game programmer and senior multiplayer programmer, might be in an effort to rectify those errors (we hope).
With the creation of the Glacier 2 engine which is being utilized for the next Hitman, IO has a lot more breathing room for how Kane & Lynch 3 will play. From our E3 2011 preview of Hitman: Absolution, graphics and gameplay have been ramped up significantly – To see those kinds of changes being implemented in K&L3, there’s a small feeling of glee. In the trailer for Hitman: Absolution, you can see for yourself the kinds of things IO can utilize Glacier 2 for, including a lot more hands-on dispatching of enemies.
At the end of Kane & Lynch 2, the only thing on the titular anti-heroes’ mind was getting the hell out of Shanghai and the only way they could have managed to do it was by essentially hijacking a plane. Destination? Who knows, but they got out of Shanghai after the worst 48 hour period either of them could have had ever. Whatever IO has in store for them next, it’ll be something to look forward to.
Kane & Lynch 3 has not yet been officially announced, but chances are it will come out on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
