With Hitman 3 officially launching last week, IO Interactive is ready to move on to its first project away from the iconic stealth-action series in years, with the team now working on its newly announced James Bond game. Titled Project 007, the game looks to be the first video game adaptation of the beloved movie license since 2012, with many claiming it's a perfect fit for the accomplished developer.

Although the project is still in the early stages, it seems as though IO definitely has solid plans for Project 007 going forward, with the team recently revealing some interesting narrative details during an interview with Danish publication DR.dk. According to IO Interactive director Hakan Abrak, the studio can envision the game becoming a trilogy if the story plays out well.

"We are also making a completely original story, and you could easily imagine that a trilogy could come out of it," Abrak claims while discussing the idea, confirming that the studio will be working on a completely original 007 narrative to complement its fresh take on the franchise. Seeing as the studio recently pulled off an acclaimed trilogy through its lorded Hitman reboots, it definitely feels as though Project 007 would be in the right hands if it were to be stretched into a trifecta of games.

The news doubles up with the recent announcement that IO Interactive won't be basing their story around a pre-existing version of James Bond, with the team deciding to instead create their own take on the character. It'll be intriguing to see what its vision of the series looks like when it debuts in the years to come, especially considering few Bond games in the past have attempted to imagine their own version of the titular spy. Although there's little news as to when to expect the game, it seems wise to assume it's still years off considering the team's been hard at work on Hitman 3.

Speaking of the third and final iteration of IO Interactive's World of Assassination trilogy, Hitman 3 has been a massive success for the studio, bringing in glowing reviews. Its also become one of the best selling iterations of the long-running franchise to date, with its physical edition outselling its predecessor's in the UK and it boasting the biggest digital launch in the series' history. It will mark the end of Hitman for the foreseeable future, with IO now moving on to Project 007 and allowing fans to continue playing the range of levels offered through each of the World of Assassination entries.

Project 007 is currently in development.
