Insurgency developer reveals a new mod for the military shooter that takes players back to iconic World War 2 battles Normandy and Battle of the Bulge.

Over the last year, New World Interactive's military simulation shooter, Insurgency, has experienced massive growth, reaching two million players worldwide. What started out as a Half Life 2 mod has exploded into a much-beloved cult classic among Steam gamers.

With so much success, New World has announced it willl be adding a new mod to Insurgency called Day of Infamy. The mod will take players back in time to World War 2, and will completely convert the game from a modern FPS to an all-out World War 2 shooter.

As the name suggests, the name Day of Infamy draws inspiration from another Source mod, Day of Defeat, which found huge success in 2005. The team behind the Day of Infamy mod showed off some of the game in a Twitch stream over the weekend, and so far it’s looking pretty impressive. Here’s an archive of the stream:

True-to-life military simulators have become more popular over the last few years, especially as developers have incorporated unique mods into the games. For example, the Arma series experienced a massive bump in player numbers after the zombie-centered DayZ mod was released for Arma 2. Now, DayZ is a standalone game, and the latest Arma game, Arma 3, continues to see great success. Similarly, we wouldn't be surprised to see Insurgency continue to grow with the release of Day of Infamy.

Also, as mainstream shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield continue to focus on modern or future combat scenarios, many gamers are clamoring for titles that harken back to mid-20th century combat, most notably World War 2. There just seems to be something compelling and intriguing about the second World War that draws gamer interest.

Insurgency players interested in playing Day of Infamy can pick up the mod for free through Steam’s Workshop, though it does require the beta branch of Insurgency to be enabled. We’ll note that the mod is still a work in progress, but the team at New World are looking for help from the community to improve and enhance the mod beyond its current state.

So far, it looks like the Day of Infamy mod will focus around the European Theater of World War 2, with the first two maps focused around the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. There are undoubtedly more maps on the way that will thrust players into other well-known World War 2 battles, though there’s no word on whether or not players will ever reach the Pacific Theater of the war.
