Last August, Sony Computer Entertainment finally acquired Insomniac Games for the amount of $229 million. This came after a 23-year relationship between the companies, starting with Disruptor and Spyro the Dragon on the original PlayStation, and blossoming with Ratchet & Clank during the PlayStation 2 era, eventually resulting in 2018's incredible Spider-Man for PlayStation 4.

However, before it was acquired by Sony, and even before the studio dabbled in third-party games such as Fuse and Sunset Overdrive, Insomniac Games made the beloved first-person shooter series Resistance, and after a vague teaser on Twitter, fans think it's finally coming back.

Insomniac Games posted on its Twitter today an image of one of the PS3 shooter's alien creatures (the 'Chimeras'), along with the caption "Do you feel lucky, punk?" This has led many to believe that the studio is teasing some sort of announcement regarding the series. While at first blush this seems like a bit of reach, it actually makes more sense than some think.

The first game in the Resistance series, Resistance: Fall of Man, launched on November 14th, 2006, in North America, the same day as the PlayStation 3, and quickly became the first PS3 game to sell over one million copies. Its sequel, Resistance 2, also went on to sell over a million copies, however many fans were disappointed in it compared to the first. This led to the final entry in the Resistance trilogy, Resistance 3, selling the worst in the series' history, even despite much critical acclaim. Despite this, the series has continued to have a cult following, even earning itself a less-than-beloved PlayStation Vita spinoff, Resistance: Burning Skies, which was developed by Nihilistic Software.

While the Resistance series has more or less faded into obscurity in recent years, fans are still clamoring for some sort of remaster or remake, and given the impending release of the PlayStation 5, as well as Sony's acquisition of Insomniac Games, now seems like the right time for Resistance to make a comeback, especially given the series' history as a PlayStation 3 launch title.  With the majority of the studio's Spider-Man game's development taking place in Insomniac's headquarters in Burbank, California, it remains to be seen what its Durham, North Carolina team has been up to, if it's working on any triple-A title at all.

Being given the opportunity to reboot, remake or remaster Resistance may even have been what finally tipped the studio over the edge to allow Sony to acquire it in late 2019, as in 2018 Insomniac's community director James Stevenson said he didn't think it was likely the studio would ever make a Resistance 4.

This is all speculation, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that fans could be seeing a new Resistance title sooner than some think. Hopefully, more information will emerge at the PS5 reveal event rumored to be taking place later this month.

Resistance: Fall of Man first launched as a PlayStation 3 launch title on November 26th, 2006. The most recent entry in the series was Resistance: Burning Skies, developed by Nihilistic Software and released on the PlayStation Vita on May 29, 2012.
