Insomniac Games is one of the most well-known and highly-regarded developers around, and they didn't just earn that reputation overnight. This is a company that established a name for itself with Spyro the Dragon and spread out to other franchises such as Ratchet & Clank and Resistance.
Of course, there are quite a few fans who would absolutely love to get their hands on just one more Spyro game made by Insomniac, but unfortunately for them that dream may never become a reality.
During a recent Resistance 3 press event in Toronto, I was fortunate enough to talk to to the game's Creative Director Marcus Smith. We talked a bit about the upcoming game, but sooner or later the topic of Spyro the Dragon was sure to come up.
Obviously, Activision holds the license to Spyro now, but I was curious to see if Insomniac would like to revisit their baby if given the chance. Marcus's answer was surprising to say the least.
Q: "If Activision came to you and said, "Hey, we'd like you to make a new Spyro," would you do it?"
A: "No, we wouldn't do it. That ship has sailed. I loved Spyro — it was the franchise that made me want to work at Insomniac Games. But we want to do new — you know? I mean we're doing sequels of games right now, and yet the things that are really exciting is forging that new path. That's what's exciting about Overstrike and future projects. We're kind of moving on."
It would appear that Insomniac is more focused on new IPs at the moment, and that's completely respectable. It's a bit of a bummer to hear that they wouldn't be open to making a new Spyro the Dragon, but they have plenty of other well-received universes to build upon if they wish. In the meantime, however, gamers will have Resistance 3 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One coming later this year, and they should help tide over their followers.
Overstrike seems to be only the first push, of hopefully many, for new franchises coming from Insomniac Games, and given their pristine track record it would appear that fans don't have much to worry about.
