Netflix has cancelled Inside Job, the streamer's latest adult animated offering. The show had been renewed for a second season, but any future seasons now appear to be a no-go.Inside Job was centered on real-life conspiracy theories with a comedic twist. Created by Shion Takeuchi, the Netflix series centered on Cognito, Inc., one of the six government organizations that run the Earth. The series was also executive produced by Takeuchi alongside BoJack Horseman director Mike Hollingsworth and Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch. The series boasted positive reviews, having been compared to Futurama, and was praised for its inclusion of LGBTQ+ themes.RELATED: Interview: Lizzy Caplan Talks Netflix's Inside Job & The Lessons She's Learned Over The YearsTakeuchi posted a statement on her Twitter regarding the cancellation of Inside Job. In her statement, Takeuchi wrote, "I’m sorry guys, it’s true." Takeuchi further shared that she was heartbroken and devastated by the cancellation, noting that the characters had become like real people in her mind, and not being able to share the rest of their stories was a hard pill to swallow.

Inside Job featured some top-tier talent. Takeuchi had previously been a writer on Gravity Falls, which Hirsch also worked on, and the series was considered a pioneer in children's animation. Hollingsworth's work on BoJack Horseman was likewise considered groundbreaking, and that series was once one of Netflix's greatest hits. The voice cast of Inside Job was also full of notable names, including Lizzy Caplan, Christian Slater, John DiMaggio, and many more.

In recent months, there have been several cancellations for projects that had previously secured a renewal over at various streamers. For example, over at HBO Max, Minx was cancelled despite its second season being nearly complete and was later removed from the service altogether. It may be a bit early to call it a trend, but there is an oddity about these moves.

Inside Job also joins the ranks of other cancelled animated series. Their cancellations appear even more numerous because streamers view them as an easy way to slash budgetary prices. For instance, Olan Rogers' Final Space was cancelled to become a tax write-off despite its unique storytelling and positive reviews. It appears there is less leeway afforded to animated projects, and it is hard to say why that might be certain. However, these shows may often become casualties because animation as an art form is rarely given the respect it deserves.

Inside Job season 1 is now available on Netflix.
