Updated on February 23, 2022, by Mina Smith: A lot of updates and changes have happened in the world of Inscryption since this article was originally written. Not only has Kaycee's Mod beta DLC been added to the game, but a brand-new piece of the ending has been found as well. The mysteries of the mailing have been solved, and players were finally treated to the so-called "True Ending," which was hidden as a YouTube video. This article has been updated with all the new information on this strange addition to an already strange game ending.

The First Cipher Code in Inscryption

Hidden in the game's files that players have to download in order to play the indie game Inscryption, there is hidden a text file called log.txt. Using a series of decryption codes found in-game, players can find hidden messages. There are currently four known cipher code clues in Inscryption, and knowing developer Daniel Mullins Games, players can probably expect to see even more pop up as players dig further into the lore.

The first cipher in the genre-bending Inscryption is hidden in the ending cutscene, written on a post-it note. It reads MYCOLOG1ST12|P3RHAPS??|BLOOD$L3TT3R8OX

Inscryption-Cipher-Hidden-Secrets-1
  • MYCOLOG1ST12 refers to the hidden boss in Part 3 while Inscryption players are trying to solve all those sliding puzzles, called the Mycologist. After the Mycologist is defeated, players will find a card, and the first numbers on the card are 918234489010. This is the first part of the cipher.
  • P3RHAPS?? points to the fake name in the credits of the game "Louis Natas," who created the Beeper model. This is a reference to a previous game by the same developers called the Hex. There is a link to the Beeper model that doesn't exist, and players have to replace the letters and numbers in "perhaps" with the corresponding numbers in the URL that leads nowhere: 8339344??.
  • BLOOD$L3TT3R8OX points to the meeting with the Bone Lord in Part 2 of Inscryption. If players have the screen resolution set to "Letterbox" or 4:3 ratio, they will be able to make out the code for this part of the puzzle: 8043!$702D!!$666

In order to use the cipher, players need to use the combined code of the three above in the OLD_DATA:

  • Start Part 2
  • Press Ctrl+C as Part 2 boots up
  • Type “cd OLD_DATA”
  • Type “decode log.txt”
  • 918234489010|8339344??|8043!$702D!!$666
  • Type “save log.txt”

The Second Cipher Code in Inscryption

The second clue for the next cipher is found in this lore conversation that has been decoded by using the first cipher

Inscryption-Cipher-Hidden-Secrets-3

The clue is all of the odd text inside of brackets and the cipher is SE:167BP:TRU|23K2F!00R|ARCHIV$NEW#GAME?

  • SE:167BP:TRU: In a player's save file, they can manipulate the save file to make SE 167 (Special Event 167) "true." This will give players the cipher when interacting with the skull in the cabin; click on it over and over again until it gives up its secrets. IAMLRNED2MCH
  • 23K2 appears in one of the videos inside of the game. According to the in-game lore, Karnoffel is one of the oldest card games in the world (Luke is looking at the Wiki page for it during the cutscene). Recreating Karnoffel in the game gives players the code needed for this part: Daus, Mantis God, Rat King, then Daus again in Part 1 before beating all the Part 1 bosses of Inscryption. The code revealed is STOP!
  • F!00R is referred to by another sticky note in the game, one that says MIRROR RORRIM. And the mirror of a floor would be the roof, and this refers to the roof of Lechy's cabin in Part 2. There are three numbers on the ground, followed by four broken tiles on one side of the roof and one on the other. This makes the clue 27341, which was also a clue in another title by the same devs.
  • ARCHIV can be translated by listening to the Archivist’s track. This track plays Morse code in the background, and this code translates to BIG EAR.
  • $NEW#GAME? references the Morse code given off by the light of the chest in P03's workshop, which glows with the New Game Card's Light. This code spells out $NO#CHANCE?
  • The new cipher is IAMLRNED2MCH|STOP27341|BIGEAR$NO#CHANCE?\

The Third Cipher in Inscryption

After using the second cipher just like the first, players will get this conversation in Polish, and will once again need the info from inside all the brackets:

Inscryption-Cipher-Hidden-Secrets-4

This makes the third clue 3BCK2B3GNN!NG|MANATEE##|B1RCHK1N$$56-57M in the indie horror game Inscryption.

  • BCK2B3GNN!NG is all about the original release of Inscryption on itch.io. The original title of the game was Sacrifices Must Be Made, and players can still download that original game and its components. This was recently updated, and all players have to do is download it, add a file into the game's folder called cipher.cipher, and the new code will pop up once the player beats the demo: WHTL!ESAHEAD
  • MANATEE## becomes ANTONY### which is a reference to a custom card that Daniel Mullins made for the card game Smash Up! This card's name was Manatee Antony.
  • B1RCHK1N Birchkin is a reference to a demo that Daniel Mullins created called Catch Monsters that was never published. It was the only creature in the game that had pacifism, and this word has the same number of letters as Birchkin.
  • $$56-57M references another Mullins title called Beneath the Surface. It's a fishing game and the same cipher.cipher file can be created in the game's folder to get this clue's answer: $$0044!3
  • WHTL!ESAHEAD|ANTONY###|PACIFISM$$0044!3

The Fourth Cipher in Inscryption

So when this third clue is ciphered, it finally unlocked the log.txt file. It is completely readable now as a URL. Clicking it leads to a Kaminski order form, and as many Inscryption fans know, Kaminski is one of the many death cards players can come across. At first, the website had three boxes players could fill out. This has since been taken down and replaced with a message urging players to wait and be patient. This seems in line with other Mullin's titles, with their involved and difficult video game puzzles.

Many players managed to type in their email and physical addresses before the site was taken down. Once it was full, the website read:, "Orders is full. Seriously, what is wrong with YOU? Please await packages in the mail if ordered." So players waited and after a while, their patience was rewarded.

The Final Cipher, the Karnoffel Code, and the Hidden Ending of Inscryption

Three fans who had given the site their address received floppy disks. These disks contained three files with the final puzzle:

backup_1##.txt e-Fu####### THANKYOUFOR#|| Th# ###

backup_#2#.txt ####QZ6h### |PLAYING##| ##e E##

backup_##3.txt ########TS0 ||NSCRYPTIONFRIEND ### #nd

Final Clue: THANKYOUFOR#|PLAYING##|NSCRYPTIONFRIEND

Along with a variety of images relating to the mystery of Inscryption as well as the conversation between the people who found the deck of cards in Hitler's pocket. The cards, when viewed in order, created the Karnoffel Code, which was the basis of the worst parts of the code that made Inscryption possible. But there was also a link to a YouTube video that showed the Stoat back at his old tricks again.

This was an unlisted video attached to a YouTube channel called Kaminski Mfg. that has no other listed content on their channel. And that is the secret hidden ending of Inscryption.

Inscryption is available for PC.
