Superman has Lex Luthor. Green Arrow has Deathstroke. Green Lantern has Sinestro. Batman has The Joker… and Bane and Harley Quinn and Catwoman and Solomon Grundy. So it just wouldn’t mesh with the ethos of Injustice: Gods Among Us if Shazam, who was revealed as a playable character for the game back in February, was deprived of facing at least one of his nemeses on the brawler’s roster of 21 DC Comics heroes and villains.
Enter Black Adam. NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive still don’t appear to be finished unveiling the full Injustice cast, and Shazam’s indelible archenemy has been announced as a 22nd combatant by a menacing screenshot from the game’s official Twitter account.
Strapped in grooved, striated, black-and-gold armor emblazoned down the chest with his signature lightning bolt emblem, Black Adam looks every bit the opposing charge to Shazam’s electrified persona, and we can see a battle between the two wreaking havoc across Injustice’s interactive environments. NetherRealm has yet to define the specific attributes Black Adam will possess during combat; however we probably don’t have to look far beyond his current origin story.
Like Shazam (aka Captain Marvel), Black Adam was imbued with his powers by the wizard “Shazam,” and activates them by yelling “Shazam,” — an acronym for the ancient Egyptian gods from whom he then embodies certain traits: Shu (Stamina), Heru (Swiftness), Amon (Strength), Zehuti (Wisdom), Aton (Power) and Mehen (Courage). Revealing Shazam in an Injustice Battle Arena video last month, NetherRealm translated a near-identical mythos — the character receives the same qualities from the S.H.A.Z.A.M.-tastic gods Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury — into the combat attributes below:
- Super Powers: Flight, Strength
- Favorite Weapon: Lightning
- Super Move: High Voltage
It’s easy to see the two matching up quite evenly, despite their contrasting credos, weaving another intense rivalry into Injustice’s division-dense storyline:
Meanwhile, from arch-enemies to doppelgangers, TV Guide reported last week that Stephen Amell, who plays Oliver Queen on the hit CW series Arrow, will be lending his voice, likeness and duds to an alternate skin that Injustice players can unlock for Green Arrow in multiplayer. Originally, Green Arrow was revealed for Injustice last October as one of the game’s nimbler, range attack-oriented “gadget characters.” Arrow Green Arrow isn’t apt to change that, but Amell’s inclusion does bring another fan-favorite to the Injustice voice cast (which also includes Kevin Conroy as Batman), and further promotes the visibility of DC’s film-and-television characters ahead (way ahead) of an eventual Justice League movie.
Check out the first screenshot of Amell’s Green Arrow in Injustice below:
Ranters, what do you think of the addition of Black Adam to the Injustice cast? Would you rather play as the default, goateed, throwback incarnation of Green Arrow in multiplayer or as Stephen Amell’s re-imagining from the TV-series Arrow?
