With the days growing ever closer to the release of the DC Comics-inspired fighting game Injustice 2, NetherRealm Studios has decided to release the fourth part in its series of "Shattered Alliance" trailers to further suss out the title's story, and this time around, it teases a potentially grim future for Flash. Of course, while it may be a possibility that the Fastest Man Alive meets his untimely demise in the plot for Injustice 2, with the fighting game centering around characters from the DC Universe comic books, even if he does die, there's always the chance for revival.

As seen in the latest Injustice 2 trailer below, the video shines a spotlight on the simian supervillain Gorilla Grodd and his intentions to take over the world with a the team of bad guys he’s assembled known as the Society. Other than Grodd, the cast of characters comprising this group of ne'er-do-wells contains the likes of Deadshot, Scarecrow, Captain Cold, Cheetah, Bane, Poison Ivy, and Catwoman.

During the course of the latest Injustice 2 trailer, it's revealed that Batman has planted a mole in Gorilla City in order to determine what Grodd is up to, and the clip features audio of the Maid of Mischief herself, Harley Quinn, detailing the ranks of the Society, which could point to her being the Dark Knight's spy. Not to mention, a brief segment of the trailer shows her being thrown to the ground by Gorilla Grodd, casting further hints as to her role within the fighting game's story.

Toward the end of the trailer, it's shown that Deadshot and Captain Cold are colluding to kill Barry Allen (AKA the Flash) in a possible bid to deal a powerful blow to the heroes and fracture the Justice League. As it happens, the clip closes out with the Flash's ice-hearted nemesis standing over him with his Cold Gun, intimating that he will take the last shot to finish the Fastest Man Alive once and for all. However, as is the nature of comic book stories, there's always the chance for someone to swoop in and save him at the last minute, or even bring him back to life.

Taking all of this into consideration, it seems as if NetherRealm Studios is ramping up its efforts to set Injustice 2 apart from its predecessor Injustice: Gods Among Us in more ways than one. Not only does the story seem to be quite intricate and pay homage to some of the DC Universe's lore, with the Society being a reference to the foundation of the Secret Society of Supervillains from the late 1970s, but also the title's gameplay looks to be leaps and bounds ahead of the first entry in the series. Thankfully, fans won't have to wait much longer to give the full game a go for themselves.

Injustice 2 is set to launch on May 16, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
