As many Injustice 2 fans may attest, while the base content for the superhero fighting game contains a solid sampling of figures from the DC Universe, the nine additional characters in the Legendary Edition makes the title feel complete. With the game drawing from a huge stable of iconic characters from the popular comic book publishing house, though, it's safe to presume some fans' favorites got left on the cutting room floor. And speaking of unused assets, several pieces of concept art for a handful of different scrapped characters in the sequel have surfaced online.

As seen in the images below, the Freelance Senior Concept Artist, Justin Murray, crafted a host of various pieces of concept art for Injustice 2 for characters such as Bluebird, Constantine, Detective Chimp, Etrigan, Krypto, and Penguin. Of course, while the designs for each of the heroes and villains are decidedly wonderful and meticulously detailed, none of these DC characters made it beyond the concept phase.

Without a doubt, each of these DC Comics characters cut from Injustice 2 have plenty of potential when it comes to interesting combat maneuvers, as Krypto could have had a unique and obliquely designed move set similar to that of Amaterasu in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. That said, though, some of these characters may not have been given the green light due to the possibility of there being too much of an overlap with samey heroes and villains.

For instance, Murray's take on Bluebird looks analogous to Red Hood–especially with those rifles in tow, which could be why she was left out of Injustice 2. Plus, Etrigan and Hellboy are quite similar in terms of size and abilities due to them both being of demonic origin, and Constantine's conjuring abilities might have been too indistinguishable from those planned for Enchantress.

Whatever the reason for the aforementioned characters' exclusion from Injustice 2, it doesn't mean that they won't make an appearance in the third one–that is, if Injustice 3 ever does come to pass. For as of now, it looks as if NetherRealm Studios could be busy crafting the next Mortal Kombat.

Injustice 2 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
