Injustice 2 game director Ed Boon takes to Twitter to shoot down a rumor that suggested that the upcoming fighting game is set to be released on March 28.

Earlier this week, it appeared that the Injustice 2 release date had leaked, along with the launch dates for South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and Mass Effect: Andromeda. The information, which came from an Xbox Live Rewards page, claimed that Injustice 2 would be released on March 28, getting fans giddy that they wouldn't have to wait much longer to get their hands on the NetherRealm Studios fighting game.

However, it has now been confirmed that this purported release date is not correct. While the verdict is still out on the dates for the new South Park and Mass Effect games, Injustice 2 certainly won't be arriving on March 28. The game's director, Ed Boon, took to Twitter to shoot down the rumor, saying 'FYI: Injustice 2 is not coming out March 28.'

Though, although March 28 may not be the game's exact release date, many fans are still holding out hope that the fighting game will be available soon. A previously released marketing calendar from games retailer GameStop stated that Injustice 2 would be released in the first half of 2017.

An early 2017 release would make sense for the game, especially as fellow high-profile fighting game, Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite is targeting a late 2017 release. Releasing Injustice 2 as early as possible means that the NetherRealm Studios game will not have to battle as hard to get gamers' interest and to get people buying the game. Many have also pointed out that all four of NetherRealm Studios' previous console releases (including the series' first game, Injustice: Gods Among Us) launched within the first four months of the year, so it would be unusual if Injustice 2 didn't follow suit.

Whenever Injustice 2 launches, though – NetherRealm has plenty of opportunity to get fans (even more) excited for the game ahead of its release. For example, although Watchmen characters and characters like Red Hood have been teased, while Suicide Squad members Harley Quinn and Deadshot have been confirmed, the full Injustice 2 character roster has yet to be officially announced. Seeing a few more fan favorites on the list would make the game a day one purchase for many.

Moreover, NetherRealm has 'aggressive' Injustice 2 DLC plans as it hopes to release many new characters as downloadable content too. If (other NetherRealm fighting game) Mortal Kombat X is to go by, it seems unlikely that the full scope of these DLC plans will be revealed ahead of the game's release, but the more details NetherRealm releases, the more 'hyped' fans will be for the title.

Injustice 2 will be released in 2017 on PS4 and Xbox One.
