According to GameStop's marketing plans, NetherRealm Studios' upcoming fighting game Injustice 2 is set to release in Q1 2017, potentially putting it up against some stiff competition.

Ever since Injustice 2 was announced earlier this year, developer NetherRealm Studios has been getting fans hyped up for the game, with the showcase of 15 minutes of Injustice 2 gameplay footage being a prime example. But despite so many looking forward to punching superheroic (and supervillainous) lumps out of characters, the upcoming fighting game doesn't have an official release date beyond '2017' and so those eager gamers don't actually know when they'll be able to get their hands on it.

Although NetherRealm and publisher Warner Bros. have yet to confirm the game's release date, games retailer GameStop may have just provided a big hint at when Injustice 2 will launch. The company's latest earnings report includes its marketing plans for 2017 and in the Q1 2017 (Jan-Mar, 2017) category, Injustice 2 is present alongside Mass Effect: Andromeda and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

As Injustice 2 is set to feature Wonder Woman, it would make sense for it to be released in Q1. The new Wonder Woman movie will be released in June and so if the game is released ahead of the film, it could get a boost from fans who want to play as the iconic comic book hero. However, launching in Q1 means that the fighting title could face some stiff competition.

In February, Nier: Automata, For Honor, Nioh, Halo Wars 2, and Horizon: Zero Dawn will all be released. Meanwhile, in March, there's the aforementioned Andromeda, Ghost Recon: Wildlands and the release of the Nintendo Switch console and all of its launch titles. If Warner Bros. is looking for a little less of a challenge then January is a possibility, as Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 is the biggest game release that month, but that doesn't give the company much time to promote said release date (or for GameStop to ramp up its marketing) and is therefore the least likely scenario.

Moreover, there are still plenty of questions that need to be answered between now and that supposed Q1 2017 release date. Game director Ed Boon has teased that Injustice 2 could get Watchmen characters, while Sub-Zero and Spawn have also been teased. And though it's fun for fans to speculate, there are many who will hold off on a pre-order until the full character roster has been confirmed.

Other details fans want to know include DLC and release platform plans. It was previously confirmed that Injustice 2 will be 'more aggressive' with DLC, but just how so is unclear. Additionally, if the game is to release close to the Nintendo Switch, some will also want to know whether Injustice 2 will be available on the console. After all, Warner Bros. just confirmed that it's bringing another one of its games, LEGO CITY Undercover, to the Switch, so why not Injustice 2 as well? Hopefully information on all of this (along with a solid release date) will be revealed soon.

Injustice 2 is scheduled for a 2017 release for PS4 and Xbox One.
