It's Pride Month, which means various video games are showing their support for the LGBTQ community through special in-game events and promotions. The Injustice 2 mobile game attempted to celebrate Pride through a special event where it bizarrely rewarded players for repeatedly beating up one of the game's LGBTQ characters, Poison Ivy. This resulted in some backlash online and has now seen the developers issue an apology.

The official Injustice 2 mobile Twitter account has characterized its Global Challenge as "insensitive and inappropriate." It noted that there is real life violence against the LGBTQ community, especially women in that community, and so having an event themed around beating up an LGBTQ woman was not a great decision. The developers issued an apology and promised that they would be committed to "listening and doing better."

It's safe to say that the Injustice 2 Pride event was meant to highlight an LGBTQ character, though it seems as though there would have been better ways to do that. For instance, if Injustice 2 was going to do a Pride event, it seems like it would make more sense for it to have players play as LGBTQ characters instead of fighting them. If the event had players play as Poison Ivy and featured her as the star as opposed to the punching bag, then it likely wouldn't have garnered such a negative reaction.

The Injustice 2 mobile game certainly isn't the only game hosting a Pride event this month. Valorant is letting players unlock Pride player cards, while Dead by Daylight is adding new Pride-themed cosmetics like the Rainbow Flag Charm. LEGO has also gotten in on the Pride month festivities, with the first-ever LGBTQ+ LEGO set being released. There are numerous other Pride events happening in-game and elsewhere, and fans can expect the festivities to continue throughout the rest of June.

While most of these Pride events in gaming have been well-received by the community, others have proven to be more controversial. While the Injustice 2 Pride event backlash seems to be the biggest controversy so far, many fans are also unhappy with Microsoft's decision to limit the availability of its Pride-themed Xbox Series X controller. For one reason or another, Microsoft decided to send Pride-themed Xbox Series X controllers to select influencers and media instead of making it available for anyone to purchase, which has resulted in some criticism.

Some of the Pride events have certainly not gone off as expected, but hopefully it's smoother sailing from here on out.

Injustice 2 is available for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and mobile devices.
