NetherRealm Studios is known for including guest fighters in its fighting games, with the likes of Jason Voorhees in Mortal Kombat X and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Injustice 2. While NetherRealm's games have had some rather notable guest fighters over the years, there are some characters where the deal was nearly made but never finalized, as was the case with bringing Neo from The Matrix to Injustice 2.

Speaking to Game Informer in a rapid-fire interview, NetherRealm Studios head Ed Boon revealed that Neo was nearly added to Injustice 2 as a guest fighter before the deal fell through. While this may seem like a surprising guest fighter, Warner Bros., the parent company of NetherRealm, actually produced The Matrix films. Combine that with Neo's fighting style in the movies and he actually seems like a pretty natural addition to the Injustice 2 roster.

Having Neo in Injustice 2 would've been interesting, and perhaps the character can appear in the next Injustice game. In the meantime, Injustice 2 still had some pretty interesting guest fighters, with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles standing out among the pack.

One character that will almost certainly not be a guest fighter in a future Injustice game is Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. After the ultra-powerful Shaggy Meme blew up on the Internet, a petition was made to add Shaggy to Mortal Kombat 11 as a guest fighter. Despite thousands of people signing the petition, Shaggy is not coming to the game.

However, Warner Bros. does own the rights to the Shaggy character, and just like with Neo from The Matrix, it's not completely outside the realm of possibility to see the character in a future NetherRealm title. After all, Scooby-Doo has had multiple crossovers with DC universe characters, especially Batman and Robin, for decades, so maybe he would fit better in Injustice 3.

While some may be holding out hope for Shaggy to appear in a NetherRealm Studio game, it seems like Neo from The Matrix has a better shot. Perhaps if fans respond positively enough to the revelation that the character almost came to Injustice 2, maybe he will be seriously considered for the next game in the series.

Injustice 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
