NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon takes to Twitter to officially confirm the existence of a mobile version of Injustice 2, complete with four screenshots of the game.

Fans of Injustice 2 had reason to celebrate yesterday when a trailer for a mobile version of the game surfaced online. The 12 minutes of leaked gameplay footage showed off multiple characters including the still unannounced Cyborg and Scarecrow. With the cat out of the bag, Ed Boon of NetherRealm Studios took to his Twitter account last night to officially confirm the news and provide fans with four official screenshots of the Injustice 2 mobile game.

“Yes, #Injustice2 is coming to mobile!” the co-creator of Mortal Kombat and creative director of NetherRealm Studios tweeted. “Brand new app with tons of new features, modes & all new combat system! More info soon!”

No release date is yet available, but yesterday’s leaked gameplay made the app look like it was a finished product. That said, the console version of Injustice 2 doesn’t release until May, so there’s a chance NetherRealm is intentionally holding the mobile version back until closer to the console release date.

The studio used a similar strategy in the run up to Mortal Kombat X‘s release in 2015. That spring, the iOS version of the game launched six days before the game hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and an Android version followed soon after. There’s always the possibility that Injustice 2‘s mobile version could release sooner now that it’s been leaked, but our money is on NetherRealm waiting until late April or early May to once again generate hype right before the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version arrives.

While we don’t know a whole lot about the mobile version of Injustice 2, Boon’s promise of “all new combat” is intriguing. One of the knocks against the mobile version of Mortal Kombat X when it first released was that NetherRealm essentially re-used the combat system from the mobile version of Injustice: Gods Among Us. There were some minor tweaks, of course, but a lot of fans felt like they were playing the same game, just in a Mortal Kombat skin. Granted, there’s only so much you can do with a touch-based device when compared to consoles, but Boon’s tweet does make it sound like players can expect a fresher experience this time around.

It was already a big week for Injustice 2 even before news of the mobile version broke. A new gameplay trailer for Black Canary gave fans a closer look at the character and then a few days later NetherRealm revealed that Swamp Thing was being added to the roster. Finally, the studio released another new trailer on Valentine’s Day that featured several femme fatales including Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Cheetah.

Injustice 2 releases on May 16, 2017, on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. There is no announced release date at this time for the iOS and Android versions.
