While Time Warner was announcing its earnings for the second quarter of its fiscal year – which officially ran from April to June – the company officially declared the NetherRealm Studios fighting game Injustice 2 to be the highest grossing console game during Q2 2017. The title has achieved this feat despite launching at about the midway point of the financial quarter, as its release date came on May 16, 2017.

This may not come as much of a surprise to the myriad fans who picked up a copy of Injustice 2, as it didn't face a lot of major competition during the financial quarter that would threaten the fighting game's top-grossing success. Nevertheless, titles such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Tekken 7, and Prey gave it a shot, while other high-performing sellers released prior to Q2 such as Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 had a chance to surpass the DC Comics-inspired brawler, but ultimately did not.

Upon its launch in May, Injustice 2 debuted at number one on the UK sales charts, setting the stage for further supremacy in terms of moved units later on down the line. As it so happens, the NetherRealm Studios fighting game was so incredibly well-received by both fans and critics alike that it managed to maintain it status on the software sales charts for the second week of its availability while fending off Overwatch's sales during the team-based shooter's much-lauded Anniversary event.

All things considered, while it's safe to say that Injustice 2 won't be dominating Q3 2017 as the highest-grossing title, as there are a slew of new Triple-A games coming out during the period such as Madden NFL 18, Destiny 2, and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, it will still be interesting to see how NetherRealm Studios will continue to support the fighting game with post-launch content. Starfire is set to join the roster this month, and if a teasing tweet from Ed Boon is to be believed, then Mortal Kombat's Cyrax could be included in the ranks sometime in the future.

Injustice 2 is available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
