Last week, NetherRealm Studios promised to reveal a new character for Injustice 2 on March 2nd, and today, the company has delivered. Per the new gameplay trailer released by NetherRealm, we now know that Golden Age comic book superhero Doctor Fate will be joining the roster as the 21st confirmed character.

Doctor Fate, a title that has been bestowed to a number of different characters over the years, is a powerful magic user that has a variety of ranged magical attacks at his disposal. In the new trailer for Injustice 2, we get to see Doctor Fate's magic-based moveset in action against the likes of Superman, Cyborg, and Atrocitus, including his elaborate super move, which sees him transport his opponent to another dimension for a vicious beatdown.

Doctor Fate looks like he will be a unique addition to the roster of playable fighters when Injustice 2 releases in a few months, but the story implications of his character are particularly interesting. Doctor Fate has been depicted as an especially powerful character in the DC Universe, as his magic-based attacks make him able to take on the likes of Superman. Considering his power, it's likely that Doctor Fate will play a key role in the story of Injustice 2.

Of course, Doctor Fate may be a character that's added more for the sake of multiplayer battles than for story. In the comic books, Doctor Fate has sometimes played a more passive role than other heroes, only throwing his hat in the ring in extreme circumstances. It's possible Doctor Fate will play a similar role in Injustice 2, and only briefly appear in the story.

In the coming months, fans should learn more about Doctor Fate's role in the game's story, as well as what else he has in store, like alternate costumes, for instance. His usual blue and gold get-up hasn't changed much since his introduction in 1940, but there was a female Doctor Fate at one time that could provide for a solid alternate costume choice. In fact, it would be surprising if the female Doctor Fate isn't in the game, as NetherRealm seems to be focusing a bit more on the game's female playable characters than usual.

Regardless of Doctor Fate's alternate costumes, he looks to be a strong addition to the growing lineup of characters for Injustice 2. Whether or not Doctor Fate will play a significant role in the game's story remains to be seen, but with only a few months to go until launch, fans won't have to wait too much longer to find out.

Injustice 2 will release on May 16th for PS4 and Xbox One. The mobile version of the game is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
