The first-person shooter Counter-Strike: Global Offensive just added two new maps created by its players for an Exotic Places Contest. However, the game is currently trending online in India, not because of its new content, but because its title song was used in a news report about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic according to the eSports-focused online publication TalkeSports.

Coronavirus has been an inescapable topic of conversation, as its worldwide spread has ushered many into self-isolation with schools and workplaces closing; while delaying production on many video games, movies, and more. In the World Health Organization (WHO) situation report published today, it was reported that India alone has 3,374 confirmed cases of the virus and 77 total deaths.

The regional television news channel for Odisha, India was attempting to spread awareness about coronavirus when it unintentionally drew attention for using the CS:GO music during its report. A 15-second clip of the "lockdown" graphic introduction uploaded by talkesports shows a mix of videos with masked soldiers marching through in masks and renderings of the virus at work that become rather bizarre to watch for anyone familiar with Valve's first-person shooter.

That being said, there are undoubtedly a lot of people who are familiar with CS:GO right now. Social distancing and isolation as a result of the coronavirus pandemic have led to many games and websites seeing record-high user counts as everyone looks for things to bide their time. Counter-Strike: GO has broken a million concurrent users during this surge of online activity.

CS:GO's popularity expands beyond the confines of its own competitive scene, too. Recently a team of content creators called Team Evolve recreated the map Dust 2 in Fortnite, allowing fans of Epic Games' battle royale to experience an iconic map layout in a whole new context.

Coronavirus concerns have led to hardships for many individuals and businesses. An arcade in Portland, Oregon called QuarterWorld has shifted focus to rent out its arcade cabinets in order to stay afloat as nonessential businesses shut down. It's undoubtedly admirable for organizations like the Odisha news channel to be informing its viewers about the ongoing situation, but that doesn't mean those viewers can't have a little fun noticing its bizarre video game connection too.
