Those involved in the Super Smash Bros. community can attest to the excitement that’s in the air whenever a new character or veteran is announced for the next iteration of the series. Whether it’s a newcomer like Greninja or a returning fighter like Diddy Kong, fans understandably get hyped up by the prospect of more playable characters, and now another veteran has been confirmed to reprise his role in the forthcoming games.
One character in particular that many were unsure would return was Ike from the Fire Emblem franchise, but the creator of Super Smash Bros. himself, Masahiro Sakurai, has announced that the swordsman will be reappearing in a playable form. Fortunately, it sounds as if the powerhouse’s deadly smash attacks will also be back, ensuring that the character will be a constant threat in the process.
Taking to MiiVerse, Sakurai posted the first ever image of the remerging Brawl combatant in the Wii U version of the game, much to the delight of Ike fans the world over.
“Pic of the day. Ike, the swordsman of magnificent strength, joins the battle!! Strike your foes down with his powerful smash attacks.”
Sakurai also touched on Ike’s different appearance this time around, claiming that the new design is based off of his appearance in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. It was also emphasized that the hero’s Aether attack will be making its triumphant return, as will the fighter’s ability to unleash some serious damage with his sword swings.
“For this game, Ike’s design is based on the hero that appears in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. His sword deals heavy damage in Smash Bros., so this design suits him very well! Rest assured, he can use Aether as well.”
Many fans were beginning to believe that Ike may have been cut in favor of adding a more recent Fire Emblem cast member like Chrom from Awakening. While it’s still possible that the sword-wielding hero from the latest iteration of the series could make his debut, Ike is a very welcomed addition to the Super Smash Bros. roster on Wii U and 3DS.
Are you relieved to see Ike reclaim his spot on the roster? What other veteran characters are you still waiting to see be confirmed?
Super Smash Bros. on 3DS hits store shelves in Summer 2014, while the Wii U version will be arriving in Winter 2014.
