What was that sound? It was the sound of minds being blown. At the Tokyo Game Show, Team Ico just announced that their classic PS2 games Shadow of the Colossus and Ico are officially coming as a collection to the PlayStation 3 on one Blue-ray disc. The collection will have full HD compatibility as well as support for 3D and Trophies. If you don’t believe me, check out the reveal trailer below.

Epic gaming just got more epic. Even though these are old games, the remastered graphics look better than some PlayStation 3 games. I’m looking at you, Prototype. The proof is in these early screen shots below.

Like many gamers, I was disappointed when The Last Guardian was not shown at this year’s E3. Luckily, we got what we wanted at the Tokyo Game Show, and more. Not only did we get an amazing new trailer for The Last Guardian, now we have this new collection to get us all caught up and hyped.

Although not exactly a trilogy in the classic sense, these three games are all related. At first we believed that Shadow of the Colossus was not really a sequel to Ico, but more of a spiritual successor. Later, game director Fumito Ueda went so far as to explain the connection in an interview with Wired in 2006.  I won’t give the details here as spoilers, in case anyone has missed these games and wants to catch up. Let’s just say that  Shadow of the Colossus is actually a prequel to Ico.

Regardless of story, all three of these games share the same look and feel. The minimal dialogue and and trademark lighting effects of these games all add to the immersive gameplay. It is not known what connection The Last Guardian will have to the other two games, but I would bet that this will prove to be a significant part of the trilogy nonetheless.

This collection is an amazingly great idea. Personally, I’m more excited about this than I was about the God of War Collection that was released a while ago. About ten years ago, we were first introduced to Ico, and what Team Ico could do. Now we’re seeing the culmination of both Team Ico’s vision and the technology that brings these stories to life. When this is released make sure to run, don’t walk, to your nearest game store.

Ranters, how will you gear up for the release of The Last Guardian? Is this new Team Ico collection a must get, or will you just play these earlier titles back on your PlayStation 2?

Along with Shadow of the Colossus, Ico will be released in Ico and Shadow of the Colossus: The Collection for the PlayStation 3 in Spring 2011.
