For those who may not have noticed, Disney made some announcements the other day. A lot of announcements. Since Comic-Con and D23 couldn't quite exist in the usual format this year, the company took advantage of their Investment Day Presentation to make some big news public. This included a bevy of new shows and projects, which of course meant a new slew of Star Wars and Marvel related content slated for Disney+.

Two of those projects are going to be Guardians of the Galaxy projectsThe lovable spacefaring rogues won't be getting their own series, since Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is still on the way, but they will be getting two small specials: I am Groot and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The latter project has a release year of 2022, and the former has very little info available yet.

In terms of concrete details, there are a few things known about both projects. It has been confirmed that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will see the original cast return, and director James Gunn will even be returning to direct it. This is likely related to the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was originally supposed to hit theaters this year, but will now be slated for 2023 instead after a long and complicated series of controversies and delays. In the meantime it's nice to now that there will be some kind of showing for the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise without fans having to wait a full three years for the next installment in the main movie series.

I Am Groot on the other hand will be a more casual affair. All that is announced right now is that it will be a series of shorts following Baby Groot as he meets and interacts with "several new and unusual characters." The fact that he is Baby Groot at all likely means this takes place somewhere around the timeline of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, since he has grown significantly since that film took place. Disney didn't have much to say about these yet, but presumably they will be similar to the ones made for films like Toy Story 4, which were basically just short vignettes featuring a few characters from the film.

The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will launch in 2022.
