The discourse around unattainable body standards in media is a constant discussion. This time, Hugh Jackman has chimed in to say that he will achieve his muscled look as Wolverine in Deadpool 3 (and as he always has) through natural means only and shuns the use of PEDs.

Jackman has been playing Wolverine for more than 20 years now. He's next set to appear as Wolverine opposite Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3. Jackman has previously discussed the gruelling series of workouts he must go through to get into shape for the role, and many wondered if he used steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs to achieve that. It's a common question surrounding superhero actors, who must drastically beef up their roles.

On an appearance on Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?, Jackman addressed long-standing rumors that he used steroids to play Wolverine. “No, I love my job. And I love Wolverine,” Jackman said plainly. “I got to be careful what I say here, but I had been told anecdotally what the side effects are of that. And I was like, ‘I don’t love it that much.'”

Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine leans into his anger and aggression, so looking physically intimidating is a must for the character. However, Jackman was adamant that he achieved his look through natural means. “So no, I just did it the old-school way," Jackman said. "And I tell you, I’ve eaten more chickens — I’m so sorry to all the vegans and vegetarians and to the chickens of the world. Literally, the karma is not good for me. If the deity has anything related to chickens, I’m in trouble.”

Jackman also said he's excited to work with Reynolds and bring the Deadpool and Wolverine dynamic to life. “When I keep thinking of me and Ryan, of Deadpool and Wolverine, which are classic comic-book rivals, there’s also a dynamic that I’ve never really got to do before as Wolverine,” Jackman said. “I just thought, ‘This is going to be fun. Something I’ve never done before. I can’t wait.'”

How Jackman will return to the role remains a mystery. The last time Wolverine was seen in 2017's Logan, the character died. However, Reynolds teased TVA involvement by talking to Miss Minutes on Twitter. So, Jackman may be returning via the multiverse. As to whether he sticks around beyond Deadpool 3, that remains to be seen.

Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 8, 2024.
