While HQ Trivia saw a period of immense popularity following its release in 2017, things have certainly begun to wane for the mobile trivia game. Part of this shift away from the limelight included Scott Rogowsky ending his run as host of HQ Trivia just a few months ago, and now, a controversy focused around payment looks to knock the trivia app down yet another peg.

Specifically, Alex Jacob, a former professional poker player and winner of over $400,000 on the long-running trivia game show Jeopardy!, indicates that he secured a $20,000 win on HQ Trivia back on June 10, 2019. Jacob states that, a month later, he still has not "heard anything about payment," and he seems to believe that receipt of his winnings is unlikely at this point, saying, "I don't think they're going to pay."

In hopes of rectifying the situation, Jacob has asked his Twitter followers to retweet his post about the missing HQ Trivia payment, and he further states that he will delete said post if he has misunderstood the set of circumstances at hand. Additionally, Jacob has sweetened the pot for potential retweeters by saying that he will "give $100 to someone who retweeted" if he is "wrong" about the situation.

To note, HQ Trivia asserts that "it may take some eligible winners up to 90 days to receive cash prizes," which could explain why Jacob has not yet received his money. That said, the company has also claimed that "99% of players have been able to cash out within 48 hours of winning a game." As such, Jacob could simply be the exceptional 1%, and his payment could still be forthcoming, but his words suggest that he does not believe that to be the case.

It is no secret that HQ Trivia has been on the decline over the last handful of months, and reports have stated that this has led to significant unrest among HQ Trivia staff members. While it is possible that Jacob will, ultimately, see his prize, high-profile winners claiming that they are not being paid by HQ Trivia is definitely not the type of attention that the company wants to be getting at this time.

HQ Trivia is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
