When the first Star Wars Battlefront released it featured a solely multiplayer experience, with no options for players to engage the game offline with bots or friends. Eventually, the game did an offline option but what most Star Wars fans, including actor John Boyega, wanted was a dedicated singleplayer campaign. And so a single player campaign was one of the first things EA announced when talking about Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Of course, campaigns and story modes in multiplayer-focused games aren’t always a success. Some feel trite and disposable, but there are plenty that deliver a surprisingly satisfying experience. For this writer, Star Wars Battlefront 2’s campaign falls somewhere in the middle.

Although the developers at DICE said players should expect to spend 5-6 hours with Star Wars Battlefront 2’s campaign that was a decidedly conservative estimate. In reality, the game’s campaign takes about 4 hours to complete, even on the hardest difficulty and with collectible searching included. And if you skip cutscenes and blast through on the easiest difficulty it may be over even faster.

Even if it is a little on the shorter side, the Star Wars Battlefront 2 campaign does feature a fairly compelling story that bridges the gaps between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Granted, it isn’t going to change anyone’s perspectives on those movies, but interesting characters and character moments in the campaign. That being said, the campaign does repurpose several of the game’s multiplayer maps as singleplayer levels, which is going to be a disappointment to some. The space battle sequences, for example, are taken straight from the Starfighter Assault multiplayer mode.

The story is better than most, there are plenty of cutscenes and character moments, and the combat is varied enough to keep players engaged the whole way through. But the Star Wars Battlefront 2 campaign is shorter than the average shooter campaign and its content does borrow from the multiplayer.

Those that were looking for a decent Star Wars story to keep them occupied until The Last Jedi releases, though, should find a lot to like about Battlefront 2. However, the multiplayer side of things is a bit of a mess right now.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
