Starfield is the next big RPG coming from the legendary Bethesda Game Studios. The title will take fans to a completely new place: space. Thus far, Bethesda games have been set on Earth (or Tamriel, in the case of The Elder Scrolls franchise). Starfield presents a unique opportunity for the gaming giant to demonstrate its proficiency in the open-world genre. But Starfield has been anticipated for a long time and has been delayed since its original announcement. This has led many fans to wonder exactly how long Bethesda has been developing the new RPG.

Bethesda games feature lots of handcrafted content that is painstakingly created. These in-game assets have become increasingly detailed over the years, so it shouldn't be surprising that Starfield has spent so much time in development.

How Many Years has Starfield Been in Development?

Starfield has been in the works for at least six years. Todd Howard and the Starfield team have made claims that the project is the culmination of 25 years of work, but that is likely an exaggeration of the facts.

Rather, the new title, which will be Bethesda's most ambitious game to date, has been something that the studio has been hoping to create for decades. Starfield was originally revealed at E3 in 2018, though it had been in pre-production for a while before it was unveiled.

Bethesda's space title is massive. With over 1,000 planets, all of which will be consistent in every copy of Starfield, the game will feature countless extra activities. The main story of Starfield will be around thirty hours long, making its length greater than Fallout 4's campaign.

The title's customization options and open format will also contribute to vast amounts of content for players to experience once they enter the epic universe that Starfield has to offer.

Indeed, with ship personalization, character creation, and a story that allows players to choose their own path, Starfield will feature many exciting gameplay elements. The title will also feature a silent protagonist like in former Bethesda games, which will give players a more individualized experience while journeying through space.

While relatively little is known about the overall campaign of Starfield, or about the planets that players will get to explore, one thing seems certain: the next open-world title from Bethesda will give fans more freedom to play the game on their own terms. All gamers can do now is hope for a smooth release in 2023.

Starfield will be released in 2023 on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
