Daemon Targaryen is one of the most prominent characters in the history of House Targaryen. In House of the Dragon, a prequel series to Game of Thrones, he is quite an important character and quite possibly the most important character in Season 1 along with Rhaenyra.

With a crude personality and incredible ambition, Daemon is a character who splits opinion, yet has many fans at the same time. As he's such an important character in House of the Dragon, there are things every true fan should know about him.

9 His Nickname

Daemon Targaryen has had many aliases and the most important of them all is The Rogue Prince. As evident from the name, this alias was given to him based on his personality. Daemon was incredibly hard to control and wasn't one to play by the rules.

His actions over the course of years were befitting his title of the Rogue Prince. Some other titles that he received over the years were the Prince of the City and the Lord of Flea Bottom.

8 His Dragon

Daemon Targaryen was quite a ferocious fighter and, as with every Targaryen during that era, had a dragon mount. For his dragon, Daemon claimed Caraxes, a giant dragon known for its ferocity as well. This dragon was previously mounted by Aemon Targaryen, however, after his death, Daemon claimed it for himself.

Caraxes and Daemon formed a close bond with each other and just as Daemon was feared on the battlefield, Caraxes had a reputation of being the fiercest dragon, earning him the title of Blood Wyrm.

7 His Sword

At the age of 16, Daemon Targaryen was knighted by none other than King Jaehaeyrs I Targaryen. At the same time, he was given the sword named Dark Sister, which is one of the legendary blades of Westeros. Known to be a Valyrian Steel sword, this blade was formerly wielded by Queen Visenya when Aegon laid Conquest to the Seven Kingdoms.

For a phenomenal fighter such as Daemon himself, this sword was absolutely perfect. In the many battles that he fought, Daemon carried Dark Sister with him and its cutting edge make sure to give him the advantage over his enemies.

6 His Skill

Daemon Targaryen was known to be the most skilled fighter of his era. In combat, very few people could match him and even fewer could hope to defeat him. His time on the Narrow Sea only made him stronger and during the Dance of Dragons, Daemon showcased his skill time and again.

With Dark Sister by his side, along with Caraxes, Daemon was an incredibly formidable enemy for anyone to take on in battle. His lust for power and incorrigible personality made him even more fearsome.

5 The Gold Cloaks

In Game of Thrones, fans saw the men of the City Watch be called the Gold Cloaks. This name was actually coined by none other than Daemon Targaryen himself. After short stints as Master of Coin and Master of Law, Daemon was made Commander of the City Watch, a position that he kept for 2 years.

During his time as Commander, he made sure to improve the armament of the 2000 men placed under him. At the same time, he gave them golden cloaks, and, thus, the men of the City Watch came to be known as Gold Cloaks from there afterwards.

4 A King

Although Daemon Targaryen never sat upon the Iron Throne despite being the heir to his brother, King Viserys Targaryen at one point, he was still a King nonetheless. In 106 AC, Daemon Targaryen allied with Corlys Velaryon with the intent to claim the Stepstones.

Daemon decided to be King and after leading the Velaryon Fleet on Caraxes, he managed to emerge victorious and claimed a number of islands there, except for two. Soon after, he named himself King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea.

3 Daemon And Rhaenyra

After his return from exile, Daemon spent quite a lot of time with Rhaenyra Targaryen. He spoke to her about his adventures and praised her beauty quite often and managed to charm her. Eventually, the two started flying off to Dragonstone on their dragons quite often.

Damon then went on to marry for the second time and years after that, in 120 AC, ended up marrying Rhaenyra Targaryen and making her his third wife.

2 Ambition For The Throne

As with every ambitious person in the world of Game of Thrones, Daemon Targaryen also intended to sit upon the Iron Throne. This was apparent from how he debuted in House of the Dragon, sitting atop the Iron Throne and declaring himself the heir to his brother, King Viserys.

When Viserys' son, Baelon, died, he celebrated by calling him the heir for a day. Damon always intended to sit upon the Iron Throne, however, he died long before that came to pass. His sons, Aegon III and Viserys II, however, went on to occupy the seat.

1 His Death

Daemon was quite a brilliant fighter and it was fitting that he ended up dying in battle as well. Daemon and his dragon Caraxes clashed against Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar atop the God's Eye. In an enthralling battle, the two ripped each other apart and eventually crashed into the lake.

All four ended up dying in the fight. Aemond Targaryen was killed by Daemon, who then fell to his death along with Vhagar. Caraxes, meanwhile, managed to survive long enough to pull himself out on the shores of Harrenhall, however, he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards.
