As the second wife to King Viserys, Alicent Hightower has quite the task before her. House of the Dragon tests allegiances, and loyalties to one's house, and perhaps none are more bound than Alicent Hightower. In House of the Dragon, she prioritizes the Hightower name and wants to ensure that her blood will sit on the Iron Throne, fused with Targaryen blood.

Along the way, Alicent has made a few mistakes and has been wrong. This Game of Thrones prequel series has shown Alicent at her strongest and her weakest, with her complex pushing her further to the point of irredeemable behavior that has been seen in other Game of Thrones characters.

6 Misinterpreted The Prophecy

Alicent stands by Viserys' corpse in House of the Dragon

On Viserys' deathbed, he mentions to Alicent that to unite the realm against the cold and the dark, Aegon must be king. His dying wish is that she must do this, but in his confusion and state, he is not talking to Alicent or his son Aegon, but Jon Snow, over a hundred years into the future against the Night King and his forces.

It's not entirely Alicent's fault that she misinterpreted the prophecy spoken by King Viserys, but it is still a mistake. This mistake saw the war between Targaryens over the Iron Throne, including Viserys' own family. All over a few misunderstood words from Alicent. It's a huge mistake and one that sends destruction across the kingdoms.

5 Anything For Her Father

otto hightower

Alicent is a Hightower, despite her marriage to King Viserys. Her loyalty is to her father, and when he was stripped of the title of the King's Hand, she furthered her emotional Warfare on the Targaryens in her father's honor. In remaining as her father's servant, she allows herself to become manipulated through his words, as he is the only parent she has.

What Alicent did that was wrong involving Otto Hightower is not seeing him for his faults, or desperation to seat his grandson on the Iron Throne. Alicent birthed royalty from Viserys, all because Otto insisted upon it.

4 Lack Of Control Over Her Children

Aegon, Aemond, Helaena, Alicent, And Otto from House of the Dragon.

After a few time skips, audiences are introduced to Alicent and Viserys' children. There's Aegon, Aemond, and Helaena. These three Targaryen children all have their issues, and saying that they are strange is an understatement. Yet, Alicent doesn't even seem to care about their behavior or their crude actions. She ignores it.

What Alicent is doing wrong is not being a present and loving mother. She seems to just watch unphased as Aegon pleasures himself through a window, and only seems to care about her children when Rhaenyra's involved. Her resentment has grown unhealthy and made for some messed up children.

3 Manipulated Criston’s Heartbreak

Criston Cole confesses to Alicent.

Ser Criston Cole did not take Rhaenyra's breaking up with him lightly. He went a little overboard, and through grief and anger, decided that he would take his own life. However, he was stopped by Alicent. Not out of pity, or sympathy for a life to be taken so soon, but out of her selfish desires.

Alicent sought to use Criston as a vessel for war, the first member in her court against Rhaenyra. She helped to feed and fester Criston's hatred of the woman, and treats him less of an equal, and more of a lapdog that can do her bidding.

2 Resented Rhaenyra

Rhaenyra and Allicent Hightower.

One of the times that Alicent was wrong, was when she held a grudge against Rhaenyra for far too long. The two had been friends, the best of friends, for years. Then, Alicent marries Rhaenyra's father. Not only that, but the woman then resents Rhaenyra for wanting to live her life free of the confines of duty and responsibility of becoming naught but a mother. Rhaenyra's hatred of this duty is understandable, and Alicent takes the broken promise of Rhaenyra to heart.

Alicent was told by Rhaenyra that she swears on her mother she did not infidelity, yet Alicent knows otherwise. The woman has since despised Rhaenyra and her children, even going so far as to make backhanded comments about their legitimacy in front of Rhaenyra herself and Viserys' children. She has caused further divinity in the Targaryen dynasty, and she should have let go of her hate, and mended her relationship with her best friend, as they were both going through pain.

1 Trusts Larys Strong

Ser Larys Strong In House Of The Dragon

Lord Larys Strong is a man who cannot be trusted. His dubious plans are unknown to everyone but himself, and it seems as if he is using Alicent for his own twisted goals. Not only was Larys responsible for the murder of his brother and father, but he seems to know everything going on in and out of King's Landing. He confides this information to Alicent for a sickening price.

Larys' price for revealing information to Alicent is that she has to get her feet out. From here, Larys pleasures himself whilst staring at them. It's a very gross scene and shows the depravity and pleasure Larys gets out of ridiculing and objectifying Alicent. However, Alicent should know that if her only ally is a man who exchanges information for feet, then she must be doing something wrong.
