With car films all the rage, from the final entry in the Fast and the Furious franchise, Fast X, to the upcoming Gran Turismo movie from Sony, an IP-hungry Hollywood is seeking out franchises to boost and the long-standing toy car line Hot Wheels just found its writers for the Bad Robot and Warner co-production.

Deadline just revealed that Dalton Leeb and Nicholas Jacobson-Larson, a pair of Blacklisters–Hollywood’s not-so-secret hot-or-not list for up-and-coming scripts—are set to pen the racing actioner that will be the latest in the Mattel lineup to hit theaters.

The writers of the upcoming racing spectacular, Leeb and Jacobson-Larson, sold their first script, Endurance to Netflix in a major multi-studio bidding war that saw the pair raking in a hefty payday. Endurance is a sci-fi action flick about the first robots to start terraforming mars for mankind turning on each other in the harsh desert landscape. They’re also set to write The Fall for Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, an alien invasion thriller about a divorced couple trying to make their way home to their Atlanta suburb during an invasion (shades of War of the Worlds shine through). Their blacklist script was called Strongman, a film about the making of Star Wars from the point of view of Darth Vader suit-actor, David Prowse.

forza horizon 5 hot wheels expansion

Hot Wheels makes sense as a property for Hollywood to latch onto since it’s the best-selling toy in the world with over 8 billion and counting of the little die-cast hunks of metal sold all based on the idea of a guy named Elliot Handler who made the first ones back in the 1960s. That’s a large share of children, and adults (who, after all, are the ones in the market for all the high end collabs) set to see an action-racing spectacular that will have some big competition around the action-racing film track, even if Hot Wheels’ track is orange and features loop-the-loops.

It will be joining the upcoming July 21, 2023 release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie alongside a host of other Mattel properties that the toy company has licensed for production as movies, including the famous Magic 8 Ball, Masters of the Universe (which was previously an ‘80s flick starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man), Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, UNO, View Master, Thomas and Friends, as well as Polly Pocket and American Girl. It’s a regular Andy’s room from Toy Story of potential franchises from the toy maker and Warner Brothers, with Hot Wheels racing toward theaters as fans wait.
