Movies based on toys are all the rage these days, so it comes as no surprise that J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot announced it would produce Mattel and Warner Bros.' Hot Wheels movie.

According to the kinds of people who count these things, the Retail Tracking Service, Hot Wheels reigns supreme as the best-selling toy in the world with over 8 billion of the little die-cast beauties sold, all based on the original idea of Elliot Handler, who made the first ones out of his California garage over half a century ago. And that’s aside from all the collabs the Hot Wheels brand has made over the years with various movies, shows, cartoons, video games, and even fashion houses in the forms of recreated vehicles (like Batmobiles or the DeLorean from Back to the Future) or specialized paint jobs.

Hot Wheels is 54-years-old and Mattel bills it as the world’s biggest car-culture brand, so making a movie out of the property with Warner Bros. seems like a no-brainer. Zipping into production, Abrams is going to help open up the Hot Wheels garage on the big screen. “As the global leader in car culture, Hot Wheels has been igniting the challenger spirit in auto enthusiasts for generations," Mattel films exec producer Robbie Brenner said. He went on to elaborate on how excited everyone was to have Bad Robot along to help translate a series of little metal cars into something with an actual story, and that they expected the property to be thrilling.

Loops in Hot Wheels Unleashed

“Growing up, Hot Wheels were more than just cars, they were vehicles for our imaginations.” Peter Dodd, Vice President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures said. "Today, we at Warner Bros. are thrilled to bring that imagination to the big screen [...]." Bad Robot exec in charge of the Hot Wheels movie, Hannah Minghella (daughter of the late actor Anthony Minghella) added, “It’s that imagination, passion, and risk-taking spirit that we want to capture in this film.” This is the next big thing to come out the studios that are making Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie's Barbie, based on the iconic doll of the same name.

Barbie, currently in production, is slated for a 2023 drop into theaters everywhere. Besides Barbie and Hot Wheels, Mattel is really cracking open the toybox. The Magic 8 Ball (another property they have a film based on) says the outlook is good on their upcoming slate, with movies inspired by American Girl, Polly Pocket, Major Matt Mason, Masters of the Universe, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Thomas & Friends, UNO, and View-Master all slated for production.

If the Hot Wheels movie is anything like most people’s experiences, it will feature impossible car stunts inspired by the toy’s loop-the-loops made of the orange track before someone starts whipping their little brother with that same orange track. That, or just lots and lots of Hot Wheels car stunts featuring the bevy of cars, trucks, vehicle mashups, and quirky combos collector’s have come to expect over the years.

Hot Wheels is in development at Warner Bros. and Mattel.
