The virtual reality experience draws the player deeper into games and further immerses them in virtual worlds. While not everyone is fully on board, it's hard to deny how devices like the like Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR can enhance the atmosphere and fear factor of many horror games. The genre thrives on immersion and realism to terrify players, and VR offers a great vehicle to provide this. One need only look at one of the spookiest horror romps on the PS4, Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, for a prime example.

The on-rail shooter by Supermassive Games thrills its audience despite its linear restrictions. It puts players on a literal and figurative roller coaster ride, as they venture through a ghoulish amusement park crawling with things that go bump in the night. Rush of Blood is unique in the gaming scene, even diverging from the 2015 horror game from which it's based. Still, there are plenty of other chilling VR games that are sure to whet the appetite of its fans.

10 Slender: The Arrival

Slender the Arrival gameplay shining spotlight in darkness at Slenderman

While 2012's Slender: The Eight Pages proved truly unnerving for many, this sequel taps into the eerie formula while fleshing it out to a richer, more complete experience. The Arrival expands this scary woodland legend to a number of indoor and outdoor environments, taking players on an atmospheric ride rife with plenty of scares. Players are tasked with exploring desolate locales and gathering various items, while dealing with the looming threat of the Slender Man and other ghoulish foes.

Blue Isle Studios brought VR support by way of the Oculus Rift some months after release. This resulted in increased immersion and intense jump scares courtesy of the tall, suit-sporting creeper.

9 Transference

Many horror games, particularly of the VR ilk, lean on more traditional elements and Halloween-esque tropes. Not so for this psychological thriller. Instead of resorting to jump scares or spooky imagery, Transference relies on its twisted narrative, clever puzzles, and jarring visuals to invoke an unsettling aura. While it may seem far removed from Until Dawn, the game's interactive nature, dynamic atmosphere, and general eeriness should appeal to fans.

Developed by SpectreVision, this brief but memorable game has players explore the simulated memories of a family. It plays out as a sort of virtual Escape Room, as players piece together a mystery surrounding the troubled family.

8 The Walking Dead: Saints And Sinners

Saints and Sinners is a great additions to the walking dead franchise

There's been no shortage of fun and thrilling zombie games, and Skydance Interactive's VR shooter is no exception. The game takes advantage of the established Walking Dead premise, coupled with a gritty sense of realism and fluid mechanics offered by VR.

Saints & Sinners sets the stage for a fun, spooky experience with its gripping narrative and appealing arcade-style gameplay that features satisfying zombie finishers. Unlike some VR-based romps, this FPS thriller offers ample depth on the gameplay front. It boasts relatively vast locales, rewarding progression, and a campaign of nearly a dozen hours.

7 Dreadhalls

Dungeons can be creepy — especially dark, desolate ones crawling with hostile creatures. Enter the appropriately-named Dreadhalls, a dungeon-crawling horror that tasks players with surviving and escaping an underground lair.

The game is arguably more akin to the likes of Amnesia than Until Dawn, as players must creep about this vast dungeon with little more than a lantern and their own wits. But like the title in question, Dreadhalls offers plenty of similar chills. Its eerie atmosphere, claustrophobia, and general vulnerability throughout the two-hour journey will appeal to Until Dawn fans.

6 Here They Lie

This hidden gem from 2016 serves as a great way to show off the capabilities of PSVR, with its environmental detail and its ultra-sleek visuals. Here They Lie sends its players down a dark rabbit hole as they venture through a chilling world crawling with nefarious beings and unsettling imagery.

This survival horror captivates with its creepy aura and dark, wondrous themes. It feels like a weird fusion of Silent Hill and A Clockwork Orange. Players will be compelled to explore this twisted, anarchic world and unlock its mysteries during this three-hour trip.

5 Arizona Sunshine

Arizona Sunshine PSVR gameplay aiming dual weilding pistols at zombies

Despite its more open-ended nature and bright outdoor locales, this zombie romp from Vertigo Games should entice Until Dawn. Its dual-wielding FPS action and hordes of hostile foes are hard to resist.

The game celebrates the art of good old fashioned arcade-style gameplay, as well as satisfying looting en masse. And while there's no shortage of fun weapons and ammo to gather, there's plenty of Until Dawn-esque chills and vulnerability. After all, hungry zombies will be lurking around almost every corner of this post-apocalyptic wasteland of Arizona.

4 Affected: The Manor

More of a virtual haunted house than traditional game, this spooky experience keeps players on the edge of their seats. The game takes the on-rails rollercoaster approach reminiscent of Until Dawn, with a similar eeriness throughout.

Rather than relying on action-packed gameplay, this PSVR game thrives in letting the player sit back and soak in the spooky ambiance and rich environments. It's not easy to invoke goosebumps with such a passive, linear experience. Yet, Fallen Planet Studios pulls it off with some bone-chilling visuals, ominous themes, and intense jump scares.

3 Face Your Fears

Face Your Fears gameplay child screaming with clown doll

True to its name, this spooky VR romp takes its players on a phobia-laden ride wrought with ghosts, robots, and even femme fatales. Settings shift from the ledge of an anxiety-inducing skyscraper to a haunted childhood bedroom.

Though it stands as another virtual on-rails trip, there are plenty of scary manifestations to take in and occupy oneself with. There's no shortage of terrors lurking in the nightmare worlds crafted by Turtle Rock Studios — namely the creepy demon child that terrorizes the player.

2 Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil 7 Ethan Winters Fights Jack Baker

Following the divisive, action-laden Resident Evil 6, Capcom went back to its roots with this  creepier and more nuanced return to form. Players are tasked with exploring — and surviving — an eerie estate occupied by the nefarious Baker family. All the while, they must stave off attacks and solve puzzles.

But while Resident Evil 7 is renowned by fans for adhering more to the old school formula, there's nothing "retro" about this classic survival horror. Instead, it stands as one of the best-looking games of the genre. The VR support only adds to the rich sense of immersion, not to mention the palpable sense of fear.

1 Alien Isolation

Alien Isolation Xenomorph Approaches Gunfire

Just as Ridley Scott terrified audiences on the big screen, Sega and Creative Assembly achieve the same effect on the gaming scene. Alien Isolation is one of the scariest survival horrors in years. Players take on the role of Ellen Ripley's daughter, who must escape a desolate spacecraft while being terrorized by a deadly alien beast. With limited offensive abilities, the player must rely on stealth and wit while eluding a monster with heightened senses and super strength.

Despite being a 2014 release, Alien Isolation still holds up with regards to its rich presentation and ambiance. The game truly feels like an Alien simulator. Stellar visuals as well as lighting and particle effects grant a cinematic experience that makes the game that much creepier.
