Sometimes a horror prequel can be unnecessary, as fans feel that they have enough details, information, and backstory in order to enjoy their favorite movies and franchises. But other times, fans love spending time with these characters and worlds so much that it's hard not to wish that there was a movie about how it all began.

From '90s slasher movies where prequels would make a big splash to a more recent critically acclaimed one-off movie about an interesting curse, there are several horror movies that are just begging for a prequel.

Scream (1996)

Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott in Scream

With Scream being one of the most popular horror franchises ever, it would be fascinating to watch a prequel movie about Billy Loomis's dad having an affair with Maureen Prescott. This prequel would work well since the Scream movies aren't scary and this film wouldn't have to be super terrifying, either.

This prequel would give fans more backstory and context about why Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) wanted to become Ghostface, and audiences could also learn more about a younger Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her family life before the horrors of the 1996 movie happened. The best Scream movies are set in Woodsboro so no one would mind spending more time in this small town, either.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

Barry (Ryan Phillippe), Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in I Know What You Did Last Summer

As a '90s horror movie that is still good, I Know What You Did Last Summer has an entertaining sequel, and a prequel would be a great idea as well. While fans find out that Ben Willis (Muse Watson) is the one behind the stalking, scares, and murders, no one knows that much about him and his life before this.

While Ben Willis isn't one of the worst horror movie villains, he isn't one of the most unforgettable, either, and a prequel movie would give him more of a place in horror history. Fans know that Ben Willis had a wife and daughter who died, and it would be interesting to shine a light on the pain and heartbreak that he experienced, as these events made him the villain who he became.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

While A Nightmare On Elm Street should get a requel, a prequel movie would also be fun and definitely something that fans of the franchise would be interested in.

Robert Englund was interviewed by SyFy and said that he would love a prequel. The actor said, "I think that the franchise probably deserves a really good prequel. There’s never been an entire movie devoted to Freddy before he was burned and the crimes and getting caught by the police and going on trial and getting away with killing children. We know that he was set free, so to me, the great part in the prequel is gonna be the lawyers, the lawyers that get him off." Englund would like for the film to end with "the vigilante parents burning him." This makes a lot of sense and would be a film that would add some layers to the already beloved franchise and would make Freddy Krueger seem even more fully formed.

It Follows (2014)

A good prequel sets up the main story and offers up some details that aren't in the original movie. Since It Follows is so popular, it would be smart to put out a prequel that explains more about the origins of this curse.

Fans love spending time in this supernatural world as Jay Height (Maika Monroe) becomes haunted by a figure who follows her everywhere that she goes. As fans learn that people pass on this curse to one another after sleeping together, it's hard not to wish to see how it all began. Did this happen to another group of teenagers? Is there ever a way to stop it? Fans have a lot of questions and a prequel film could help answer them. It would also likely be just as well-done as the 2014 film, which has become one of the most well-liked horror movies of the last ten years.

The Faculty (1998)

Kevin Williamson wrote The Faculty, one of the most exciting '90s horror movies. Casey Connor (Elijah Wood), Zeke Tyler (Josh Hartnett), and Stokes Mitchell (Cleo Duvall) hate going to their high school everyday, and things become even stranger when they realize that aliens have taken over their teachers.

While the movie does do a great job explaining the science-fiction elements, there's always room for even more, and fans would definitely be happy with a prequel film with even more explanation of how the teachers changed. It would be cool to learn how the alien invasion began in this tiny town in Ohio and to maybe even learn more about who the teachers were before this happened to them.
