2022 was an impressive year for the horror genre, with slashers reigning supreme throughout all 12 months. While some remakes fell flat, like Stephen King's Firestarter, Jordan Peele's Nope fascinated audiences in the summertime, Ti West created a scary and colorful world for Mia Goth's Pearl, and Scream (2022) showed that Ghostface is still as compelling as ever. With a year of such exciting and well-reviewed films, can 2023 offer the same moviegoing experience?

Based on the roster of 2023 horror films, it definitely seems like the next year will offer fans of the genre the types of stories that they're looking for, whether it be a cheesy and campy tale of a killer doll or the next entry in the Scream franchise.

There are two main 2023 horror movies that promise a fantastic year: M3GAN, Scream 6, Knock at the Cabin, and MaXXXine. Blumhouse's creepy doll film M3GAN was released in early January 2023 and tells the campy story of a roboticist named Gemma (Allison Williams) who becomes the guardian for her young niece Katie (Violet McGraw) when Katie's parents pass away. While the consensus is that the movie isn't scary, it's still proving to be enjoyable, and that already makes it one of the year's stand-out releases. It's also doing really well at the box office, having grossed $26 million in its opening weekend. Every year needs a few purely fun horror movies that get people talking and excited about what's possible for the genre. 2022 had many films that were a great ride, from X and Pearl to Bodies Bodies Bodies and Barbarian. It looks like that trend will continue in the coming months.

Scream 6, which is set in New York City and will be released on March 10th, also promises to be an interesting and engaging movie. Hopefully Scream 6 will use Jenna Ortega well and will make her character, Tara Carpenter, a bigger part of the story. Even if that doesn't end up being the case, Ortega's talents will definitely be a memorable part of the movie, as Tara is a smart and interesting character who is likely ready to fight Ghostface again. While the NYC setting could go either way, it's possible that this will serve as a necessary refresh and reboot for the slasher franchise.

The worst thing that a franchise can do is tell the same story over and over again without adding anything new, and at least Scream is branching out. It will be cool to see how Scream 6 uses the setting, and from the trailer, it appears that the stakes are higher and the atmosphere of fear is even worse since Ghostface can hide in a crowd so easily.

The fact that there will be a sixth Scream film that fans are excited about speaks to the longevity of this legacy slasher franchise and proves that the genre is here to stay. It would be easy for audiences to be bored with the scary story of Ghostface, but instead, there's still love for this intelligent and funny group of movies. Now that Courteney Cox is the only original actor returning and Gale Weathers will be fighting alone without Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) or Dewey Riley (David Arquette), the story feels even more powerful. Gale will likely have a more compelling role to play because she's the last person standing.

M. Night Shyamalan also returns to the genre with Knock at the Cabin, which will be released on February 3rd, 2023. The movie follows a family on vacation who are told by creepy strangers that in order to stop the apocalypse, one of them has to die. While some horror movies waste great premises, it seems likely that this will be an impressive and well-told story, thanks to Shyamalan talents. The film has an excellent cast that includes Rupert Grint, Jonathan Groff, and Dave Bautista and is definitely one of the most anticipated movies of the year.

MaXXXine X Ti West Mia Goth

Ti West will also release MaXXXine, the third film in his trilogy starring Mia Goth, in 2023, and this is another reason why 2023 will be another solid and stand-out year for horror. 2022 was so exciting because of talented filmmakers like West who push the boundaries of the genre and can make an old-fashioned yet contemporary slasher like X and then return with a brightly colored and whimsical story like Pearl. It will be great to see what tone and feeling MaXXXine has and how this continues the story that has been brilliant and creative so far.

With so many exciting movies coming in 2023, it's possible that the year will bring the same fascinating, terrifying, and memorable horror films that 2022 did. The line-up of films is exciting and sure to get people talking as much as 2022's releases did.
