Horizon Forbidden West has now been available for nearly a month, but players are still learning the inner workings of the massive open-world action-adventure game. It isn't just that Horizon Forbidden West is massive, either, but that it's a genuinely challenging experience. Unique enemy design has escalated Horizon Forbidden West's enemy difficulty even above Horizon Zero Dawn's, including with its own enemies -- like with Thunderjaws. Luckily, the community is coming together to offer advice as necessary.

A video recently shared on the Horizon subreddit provides a special tip for Horizon Forbidden West's frustrating Thunderjaws. Many players have had a rough time with Thunderjaws, particularly on harder difficulties, due to the enemy's lasers. The Thunderjaw ejects a large number of drone-like machines that each target Aloy with a laser that follows her as she moves around. The video creator has a simple solution for the problem -- shooting the small laser drones.

It may seem intuitive, but in the middle of combat against a giant lumbering Thunderjaw, it's easy to think that the laser drones it fires are immune to damage and untargetable. That's not so, however. The video shows Aloy quickly taking aim at the Thunderjaw drones with her bow and causing them to explode with a simple arrow. Since the drones, once fired by the Thunderjaw, come to a complete stop in the air, it's easy for Aloy to target them even as she runs from the lasers.

Better yet, the explosion caused by hitting Thunderjaw drones with an arrow covers a surprisingly wide area. This can help significantly in two different ways. First, shooting a drone that's hovering next to one or more other drones will cause them all to explode. Second, if Aloy can target a drone as it's leaving the Thunderjaw or draw the Thunderjaw to be close to one of the drones, causing the drone to explode will also harm the Thunderjaw.

There may be a number of Horizon Forbidden West players who are already familiar with this tip. It worked in Horizon Zero Dawn, too, after all. But it just goes to show how intricate combat can be in the games that there are so many who are unfamiliar. When it comes to the robotic enemies of Horizon Forbidden West, almost everything can be targeted and serves a unique purpose.

In the end, the Horizon Forbidden West's biggest goal stands proud. Guerrilla Games wants players to experiment in combat. It wants players to use different types of arrows to target different parts of enemies to see what happens. Mix in traps, fight while mounted, and stealth as necessary, all to make combat as exciting as possible. And hopefully, don't get hit by any Thunderjaw lasers in the process.

Horizon Forbidden West is available now on PS4 and PS5.
