Though the melee combat in Horizon Forbidden West can at times feel a little samey, the huge variety of weapons on offer in the game ensures that ranged combat always feels fresh. There are nine weapon types in total, each of which is broken up into five different rarity levels. These range from Common, which, unsurprisingly, perhaps, tend to be pretty basic, right up to the incredibly powerful Legendary weapons.

When players first begin their journey into the forbidden west, they'll mainly be using Common and Uncommon weapons. As the story progresses though, they'll gradually gain access to Legendary weapons, which, as the name might suggest, are the best weapons in Horizon Forbidden West. As well as having higher stats than their non-Legendary counterparts, each one boasts four or five perks and can be equipped with as many as five coils once it's been fully upgraded.

Updated April 21, 2023, by Tom Bowen: Released in early 2023, Horizon Forbidden West's Burning Shores expansion provides players with plenty of new content. There's a new story campaign, three additional side quests, and a whole host of brand-new equipment, including nine new Legendary weapons. Together with the ones introduced in the game's New Game+ mode update in June of 2022, this brings the total number of Legendary weapons up to 26, ensuring that players have plenty of options when it comes to taking down the game's many deadly machines and bosses. However, finding every Legendary weapon in Horizon Forbidden West will not be easy, nor will gathering up the materials needed to fully upgrade them all.

There are nine Legendary weapons in The Burning Shores, six of which will need to be purchased from the Hunter in Fleet's End. The other three are tied to main story and side quests, with two being given to players directly at the end of their respective quests and the other found in a supply crate partway through. Purchasing and fully upgrading these Legendary weapons will require players to find lots of Brimshine: a rare component similar to the Greenshine crystals found throughout the base version of the game. It's worth the effort though, as they rank pretty highly among the very best weapons in Horizon Forbidden West.
