Face paints are cosmetics in Horizon Forbidden West that players can use to alter Aloy's look. While fans will start earning face paints quite early during their playthroughs, they will not receive much information about how to use them. Fortunately, it is very simple to equip face paints in Horizon Forbidden West, though it may take players some time to reach the point where it becomes possible to do so.

Horizon Forbidden West: How to Equip Face Paint

In order to use face paints, players must simply locate a Painter, NPCs that appear on Horizon Forbidden West's map as an icon that looks like an archaic tool with a handle. Indeed, these NPCs will be happy to apply any face paint that has been unlocked for 10 Metal Shards, or they can remove a face paint for a single Shard. Painters are not present in the game's earliest locations, though, and it may be numerous hours of play before a fan finally encounters one.

The first Painter that a Horizon Forbidden West player is likely to come across is named Zokkah, and he is located at the Scalding Spear. There is also a Painter in the Bulwark and one in Thornmarsh, and the aforementioned icon should lead fans directly to them. Regardless of the NPC that a player ultimately visits first, the process for using face paint is as simple as speaking with the Painter and then selecting the cosmetic that is to be applied.

Horizon Forbidden West: How to Get Face Paints

The vast majority of face paints are unlocked by completing main story missions and side quests in Horizon Forbidden West. That said, there is one special face paint that is obtained by collecting hidden War Totems, of which there are three. This particular cosmetic is sure to be of great interest to fans of God of War, and they should always be on the lookout for War Totems while they are exploring.

One final thing to mention is that players can change Aloy's face paint freely in Photo Mode. This is something that purchasers of Horizon Forbidden West's Deluxe Edition should be aware of, as Photo Mode will give them access to the extra face paint that they are entitled to. Fans may still want to explore Photo Mode even if they have not bought that edition, though, as it is a great way to get a look at face paints, poses, and more.

Horizon Forbidden West is available now on PS4 and PS5.
