Horizon Forbidden West builds upon Horizon Zero Dawn in meaningful ways. It adds several new machines and weapon types to the game while significantly expanding Aloy’s arsenal. Players can use a variety of new abilities to take down their enemies in Horizon Forbidden West, and they can also choose from one of three skills for each weapon type.
The story of Horizon Forbidden West takes place a few months after the events of the original. Horizon Zero Dawn wrapped up a majority of the mystery, and almost all the questions it raised were answered by the end of the game. Developer Guerrilla Games hinted at a sequel in the after-credits scene, with Horizon Forbidden West using it as the foundation of its story. Now, it seems like a developer at Guerrilla Games is teasing a sequel to Horizon Forbidden West.
In an interview with VG247, Mathijs de Jonge, Game Director of Horizon Forbidden West, talks about the game’s ending. He states that the Horizon series is about uncovering mysteries from both the old world and the present day. He also mentions that Guerrilla Games can tap into the rich, extensive backstory to create new mysteries and storylines. Like Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West ends on a cliffhanger, and Mathijs confirms that the team is using the ending sequence to set up things for the next game.
Horizon is a massively successful franchise, with Horizon Zero Dawn selling over 20 million copies on PS4 and PC. So, it comes as no surprise that Guerrilla Games will continue to release more games in this series. However, there is no indication of when fans can expect this sequel. It's worth noting that Horizon Zero Dawn received an expansion called The Frozen Wilds later in 2017 to a similarly positive reception. So, it’ll be interesting to see if Guerilla Games decides to release such an expansion for Horizon Forbidden West to bridge the gap between the mainline games.
A recent rumor shed light on some of the projects in development at Guerrilla Games. According to this leak, the developer has been working on a multiplayer shooter for three years, with one source claiming that it’s a new SOCOM game. The leak mentions that Horizon will be a trilogy, and Sony considers it one of PlayStation's key franchises. It also states that a VR spinoff is in development, which has been confirmed to be called Horizon Call of the Mountain, in addition to an online game similar to the Monster Hunter series. Every leak should be taken with a grain of salt, but these announcements seem plausible.
Horizon Forbidden West is available now on PS4 and PS5.
