Guerrilla Games, who has worked on Horizon Call of the Mountain alongside developer Firesprite, has announced that this latest entry in the Horizon franchise has now gone gold. PlayStation VR2 is set to release later this month with a healthy lineup of launch titles including Horizon Call of the Mountain. The Horizon series of games started on the PS4 in 2017 with Horizon Zero Dawn which introduced PlayStation gamers to the series' post-apocalyptic tribal world rampant with machine creatures. This game would be made available to even more players in 2020 when it became one of many PlayStation exclusives available on PC. A sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn titled Horizon Forbidden West was released last year for PS4 and PS5, and a spin-off VR title was announced in January 2022.RELATED: Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC is Taking Aloy to Post-Apocalyptic Hollywood Next YearThis spin-off, titled Horizon Call of the Mountain, is set to release for PS5 as one of the launch titles for PS VR2. It will be the first Horizon game to not have series protagonist Aloy as the primary playable character and will instead have players in the role of a new character named Ryas. Horizon Call of the Mountain has been one of the most hotly anticipated games for PS VR2, and a recent announcement has added to this excitement. A recent tweet from Guerrilla Games states that Horizon Call of the Mountain has gone gold and has finished development.

Horizon Call of the Mountain has been touted by Sony as one of PS VR2's premiere launch games and even included the game in a bundle when PS VR2 pre-orders opened last November. In addition to the new VR mode for Resident Evil Village as well as newer versions of VR experiences like No Man's Sky, PS VR2 will launch with a prominent first-party game with Horizon Call of the Mountain. While not the only first-party game launching for PS VR2, it is likely to be the most eye-catching for PS5 owners looking for new VR experiences.

While PS VR2 has an impressive launch lineup, its high price has created a tough barrier to entry for many. Not only do gamers have to own a PS5 to experience PS VR2, but the headset itself also starts at $549.99, making it more expensive than the PS5 itself. Perhaps the best current demographic for PS VR2 are fans of Horizon as the PS5 is already the best space for them. Not only are both mainline games playable on PS5, but Horizon Forbidden West's Burning Shores DLC will only release for PS5. With just a few weeks left until PS VR2 launches, gamers won't have to wait much longer to see how the launch pans out.

Horizon Call of the Mountain launches for PS VR2 on February 22.
