Proper use of abilities can very well be the measurement of success in Honkai: Star Rail's hardest content. A well-timed buff paired with a hard-hitting attack can keep a perfect 3-star Forgotten Hall run from becoming another flop, and saving an AOE heal for the right moment can make or break a boss fight. Ultimate abilities form the heart of this gameplay dynamic, and players need to learn how to properly manage them in order to be at their most effective.

As powerful as they are, Ultimates naturally don't come free to use. Instead of eating up Skill Points, they use their own dedicated resource called Energy, which comes with its dedicated modifier: Energy Regeneration. Honkai: Star Rail is a bit vague when it comes to the exact specifics of these important game mechanics, so here's a guide that covers both.

How Does Energy Regeneration Work in Honkai: Star Rail?

An Energy Regeneration Rate Relic in Honkai: Star Rail

To cast an Ultimate, a character needs to have a full Energy gauge, which is indicated directly on their Ultimate's icon. Almost every action in combat contributes to the character's Energy Regeneration, from dealing and taking damage to using Skills and triggering passive Light Cone and Trace effects. Abilities will explicitly say if they do not regenerate Energy, as apparent in Qingque's Skill.

The Energy Regeneration stat directly impacts the rate at which characters can use their Ultimates again by increasing the amount of Energy they gain per action. For example, with a 25% bonus to Energy Regeneration, a Basic Attack that generates 20 Energy will instead generate 25 Energy.

Unlike Genshin Impact, players don't need to collect Elemental Particles to earn Energy. Additionally, Energy Regeneration as an actual stat is much rarer in Honkai: Star Rail. Players will only be able to see this in Planar Ornaments, character Traces and abilities, several Simulated Universe blessings, and stage modifiers in events or Forgotten Hall/Memory of Chaos floors.

Honkai: Star Rail — Character Energy Table

Each character in the game has different maximum Energy capacities. This ultimately dictates how often they can use their Ultimates, with the harder-hitting ones belonging to the higher end of the spectrum. Here are the Energy caps of each of the characters included in Honkai: Star Rail 1.0.

Players can typically expect to have their Ultimates up anywhere between 4–6 turns depending on the character and Energy Regeneration stat. Characters with turn resets like Seele are capable of getting their Ultimates back up much quicker due to being able to take multiple actions per turn.

Tingyun is the only Support as of the 1.0 version who can give Energy to allies. This makes her extremely valuable in scenarios with turn limits. Other characters like Fire Trailblazer do have Energy-boosting effects, but these usually affect only themselves.

Honkai Star Rail is available on PC, iOS, and Android. A PlayStation version is in development.
