Gearbox Software, the developers of Borderlands 3, have announced the newest game in the Homeworld franchise: Homeworld 3. Unfortunately, it is not slated for release until quarter 4 of 2022. It does come on the heels of the Kerbal Space Program 2 reveal that releases slightly sooner and may tide over fans.

Homeworld 3 is described as the true sequel to Homeworld 2, as it returns to the endless skies for the RTS experience and full 3D space battles fans have come to expect from the series. Not much is known yet about this new project as it’s still in the early stages of pre-production, but the project has been added to fig.co. This gives gamers the chance to get in early to help influence the game Homeworld 3 will become and even buy shares in the game. It’s looking good so far, too. As of this writing, the crowdfunding project has already reached $333k with 29 days to go.

The Homeworld games have always been well-received, with the first game listed as the highest-rated computer game of 1999. It was one of the first spacefaring RTS games to be played on a full 3D field, allowing full freedom of motion. The campaigns for the first two games are played with the player’s fleet persistently traveling from one mission to the next, encouraging careful play while rewarding clever tactics. Later both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 would go on to be remastered by Gearbox, further improving already great games.

The latest in the franchise, Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak was released in 2016, and is the prequel to the first game. Forgoing the 3D space battles, Deserts of Kharak placed gamers on the dusty ground of the desert planet Kharak 106 years prior to the events that sparked the campaign story of Homeworld. Though it was generally accepted as a solid RTS game, it didn’t have the freedom of the Homeworld games. Until now, it looked as though that was where Gearbox would leave it.

Gearbox clearly has its hands full with Borderlands 3 and the new Mayhem Mode, as well as the myriad other games the company is working on, but the announcement of a new Homeworld game is a welcome one, even if gamers have to wait a few years for it.

Homeworld 3 is scheduled for a PC release in Q4 of 2022
